Mayors Message:
It is true.
The City of Rexburg sometimes fills driveways with snow. There are times when it
cannot be avoided. We try and when we have time, we do remove and haul away the
snow. Rexburg is the only city where the residential streets are plowed. Idaho Falls
does not plow residential streets. If we did not plow residential streets your driveway
would not be filled. Part of the problem is making safe routes to school possible for
our children who walk. The city requires a landscape strip between the curb and the
sidewalk. This strip of grass is used for snow storage, and allows for a snow free side-
walk for pedestrians. There are a few areas where the grass strip between the curb and
sidewalk does not exist and there is no place to store the snow. I live in such a neigh-
borhood. My driveway is always being plowed full of snow. There have been times
when I had to shovel to get to work and return from work and have to shovel myself
a way to get into my garage. It is still that way to this day. Becoming the Mayor didn’t
help a bit. We still must clear a way in and out. Rexburg now has an ordinance which
no longer allows subdivision construction where the sidewalk is attached to the curb.
There has to be a place to plow the snow to so that there can be a relatively snow free
sidewalk and pedestrian way.
The City of Rexburg recently acquired a very powerful snow blower that loads trucks
at a very rapid rate, which will allow our street crews to load and haul away snow
much faster.
I believe that the City of Rexburg has a better snow removal crew than any I know of.
We are sorry that driveways are blocked at times. The only alternative is unplowed
streets. Please bear with us as we try to make Rexburg a safer and easier place to drive.
Rexburg is already a safer place to live. We are the safest city in the State of Idaho and
are ranked as the 12th lowest in the nation for crime. We have very good drinking wa-
ter with no treatment necessary. Our water tastes better than most bottled water. Our
fire department is one of the finest and is considered one of the very best in the State
of Idaho.
There are many more things that we could brag about. How about those Bobcats? I
just want you to know that I as your Mayor and a fellow citizen truly love this city, and
shall strive to make it even better.
