• y officials plan to hold a public
hoanng on whether to rezone two lots on
Main Street. But they are going to ap-
proach the hearing as if girding for battle.
"I had enough calls today," Rexburg
City Council President Nile L. Boyle said
at the last council meeting, "to know that
zoning is going to be zoning.... As with
all zoning things .there's going to be
opposition: '
Boyle said the hearing would be set for
8 p.m. March 16 because that would be
the earliest date for a hearing to be held
after the city adverfises it.
The council adopted a .motion to
approve a recommendation made by the
Rexburg Planning and Zoning Com-
mission at its January meeting to rezone
two residential lots- on Main Street .into
commercial lots.
The zoning commission made the
recommendation after hearing a request.
by Karl Hanosky of Rexburg for a
variance to install a real estate office in a
house at the northeast corner of Main
and Third West streets. The two lots are
between that corner and a tavern...
The council split over whether- to
rezone the lots or grant Hanosky a
Hance despite. the zoning panel's
mmendation and Hanosky's
~alation that West Main Street would
~_.,~me a commercial area:
Hanosky told the commission.
businesses probably would expand along
West Main street to -take advantage of
the increased traffic using- the U.S.
Highway 20 exit to state Highway 33.
Councilmen Morgan Garner: and
Sander L. Larson said they would rather

consider granting Hanosky a variance
instead of rezoning the two lots.
Garner told the council he favored
granting a variance because it would be
easier. Larson said commercial property
already was available in the city and that
property should be used before any more
commercial zones are created.
"We need a master. plan. There is no
rhyme or reason to development in the
city. It just sprawls," he said.
...Councilman Jim Morris said the city
already has a master plan. "It says Main
Street should be zoned commercial alt`the
way to the overpass;" he said. -
Boyle told the council that the south..
side of :Main Street already was zoned
commercial to Fourth W est Street.. ~.
In a related matter. the council adopted
a motion ao accept. another recom-
emendation by the zoning commission to
deny a request by Ken A. Benfield of Mill
Hollow Drive to pasture a horse on
property he owns behind his house.
