Roll Call of Commission Members: Chair Empey, Vice Chair L. Jones, Historian/Secretary Patten, D. Jones, R. Robinson City representatives: Council member Tietjen and City Liaison Platt Not in attendance: Communication Officer K. Mounts Guest: Doug Ladle 2. Commission Chair Empey welcomed commission and guest Doug Ladle, Madison-Rexburg Historical Society President. 3. Secretary Patten asks who was on the phone at last month’s meeting and will update minutes to reflect only D. Jones was on the call with the Commission. Minutes approved by R. Robinson, 2nd by Vice Chair Jones. 4. Vice Chair L. Jones and Chair Empey presented to Urban Renewal, which was well received, but meeting showed confusion over who we are as Historical Commission. We are not the Rexburg Historical Society. Council Member Tietjen confirmed multiple conversations, confusing our commission for the historical society. 5. Urban Renewal suggests that all building presentations are given a history such as the thorough research done by Historian Patten and the BYU-Idaho Archives team. Council Member Tietjen said a map for Urban Renewal is in the fall City Council meeting minutes. 6. Vice Chair L. Jones called for estimates on moving and abatement of seminary building and Urban Renewal suggested to her three options: Require new build to keep building, remove building to different location or keep as in and retain building with Huber’s property. Vice Chair L. Jones will ask Bill Riggins if there are RFP’s already? Chair Empey states the Marlor binder is what makes the seminary building valuable. Sharon Marlor’s letter shared by City Liasion Platt was also sent to Urban Renewal. 7. Founders Day planning moving forward. Doug Ladle asked for volunteers to give tours of Seminary building. Historian Patten suggests BYU-Idaho Archives team who have been researching the property. Decals designed by commission will be displayed at Historic Preservation booth, and purchased at Flood50 booth. 8. Council member Tietjen reminded Commission to be an advisory committee to educate community but any Police Station questions, direct patrons to City Police booth. 9. Historian Patten suggests a survey of “what places in our community matter to you?” is created for Founders Day. This information could lead to creating historic district. Chair Empey names Water as a central historic theme with the city pump to the flood. 10. D. Jones shares Rexburg North Stake found records and deeds from Rexburg 1st Ward. Doug Ladle will contact Dean Cloward and coordinate with Historian Patten. 11. City Liaison Platt shares walking tour is being created. Meeting will be March 25 at 1pm in back conference room. Historian Patten suggests highlighting Harold Forbush home as possible site location, will check visibility from campus and is coordinating with campus University Relations for all campus locations and signage. 12. Additional people and flood stories mentioned include: Annette Morton riding in 1976 flood parade, KRXK Rod Arkette, and Jerry Miller radio audio recently donated to BYU-Idaho Archives. 13.
