I am writing to you as a mother who values provident living and tries to do the best I can for
my family. I am deeply concerned about the high cost of the proposed LID for curb and
gutter and the impact it will have on my family. I have lost a lot of sleep in the past two
weeks, and I have continually worried about being forced to assume this long-term debt.
We live simply, are grateful for what we have, save for what we need, and make careful
choices to provide opportunities for our children. I keep thinking about a recent experience
when we were shopping for a new refrigerator for our home. After talking with the
salesperson about different models and their expected lifespans and visiting about our
daughter, who is currently serving a full-time mission in France, we left without making a
purchase but feeling good about our 25-year-old refrigerator continuing to meet the needs
of our family for just a little bit longer. We do not have a sprinkler system for our yard, air
conditioning, or a finished basement. These are things for which we have never felt
comfortable incurring debt. The estimated LID cost for our property is $16,290.20 ($222.14
a month for 10 years). According to the city finance department, this is an estimated total
of $19,202.07 with interest. Our homes sit on large one-acre lots, and these projected
costs are unreasonable for families balancing other basic needs and financial obligations.
Please help us find a solution that does not excessively burden our families and compel us
to go against our core values.
Sincerely,
Amy McCoy
