Request:
On this project, we have found Lava rock, and the plans necessitate the light poles to be installed at a depth of 5 feet. In the event
that we come across Lava rock during installation of the light poles, would it be feasible to reduce the length of the pole bases and
anchor them to the lava, or would you suggest an alternative approach. If shortening the pole bases is indeed possible, what
requirements must we meet?
Response:
In communication with Jeff Hansen, we have confirmed with the electrical engineer, the soils / geotechnical engineer, and the
manufacturers Hilti and Simpson. There is no testing data available for this application because bedrock conditions are quite
varied.
In light of this, and because this is not a large installation, it is approvable in the following conditions:
- The size of the rock that is being tied into shall be at least as large as the portion of concrete foundation that is being replaced.
- The rock that is being tied into is a consolidated piece and not fractured into sizes smaller than noted above.
If this is the case, please use #4 bars embedded 8" into the bedrock and epoxied. Lap each rebar 24" minimum. Please contact
us further for any specific conditions that have complications for this.
