We have been retained to review the feasibility of adding solar panels to the above referenced site. We have
reviewed the solar panel installation site plan and conclude that the panels will not negatively affect the structure
at the site mentioned above. The solar panels and their respective design, attachments, and connections shall be
per the responsibility of the manufacturer/installer and shall be installed and designed in accordance with the
2018 IBC and ASCE 7-16.
The structure is adequate to take on the additional lateral loads due to the solar panels for the following reasons:
Any increase in wind loads is negligible due to the mounting pattern of the panels being flush with the existing
roof. The solar panels weigh 2.5 psf. Per the IEBC section 503.4, the lateral force resisting system need not be
adjusted for less than a 10% change in seismic loads. Since the roof dead load is 15 psf, and the solar panels that
weigh 2.5 psf affect less than 50% of the roof structure, the increase in seismic lateral loads is less than 9%.
The structure is also adequate to resist the gravity loads due to the solar panels for the following reasons: The
existing roof framing consists of 2x8 rafters @ 24” on center. The attached calculations show that the 2x8 rafters
are adequate to support the existing dead loads, added solar panel dead loads, and anticipated roof snow loads for
the distance that the rafters span between supporting beams. See the attached calculations for further
clarification.
All attachments of the solar panels to the roof structure shall be staggered and spaced on various rafters/truss top
chords per the rail system manufacturer in order to have the loads shared by multiple roof structural elements.
