Subject: Historical Preservation Ordinance
Hi!
I did a search on my email for the ordinance and found an email from SHPO CLG Coordinator two years
that explains that our commission or committee has to have at least one preservation professional (they
would like two but one will work) and that the members need to be members of the public and not City
Staff.
This link will take you to a pdf of what the standards that the professionals must have in order to qualify
as a preservation professional. Archeology and Historic Preservation; Secretary of the Interior's
Standards and Guidelines (nps.gov)They can be found at the bottom of page 24 and the top of 25.
With that in mind here are the changes that we discussed to make to the ordinance and a few tweaks so
that we can qualify for the CLG.
I typed up the ordinance as it presently states but then placed the new updated wording in red
underneath.
Section III:
1. The Historic Preservation Commission shall consist of nine (9) members who shall be appointed
by the Mayor with the advice and consent of the Council.
1. The Historic Preservation Commission shall consist of at least five (5) members but no more
than nine (9)who shall be appointed by the Mayor with the advice and consent of the
Council.
2. Members of the commission, at least seven (7) of whom shall be residents of the City, shall
demonstrate an interest in the historical and architectural development of the City, and shall be
appointed with due regard to the proper representation of such fields as history, architectural
history, architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning, engineering, archeology, and law.
2. All members of the commission, A* '^-as+seve.p (7) of whem shall be residents of the City and
shall demonstrate an interest in the historical and architectural development of the City,
with at least one (1) member who meets the Secretary of Interior's Professional
Qualifications Standards and shall be appointed with due regard to the proper
1
representation of such fields as history, architectural history, architecture, landscape
architecture, urban planning, engineering, archeology, real estate, and law. Members of the
commission cannot be employed by the City, but an employee of the City will be appointed
as a liaison to the commission by the Mayor with the advice and consent of the council.
Let me know your thoughts!
Thanks!
