1 HANDRAILS SHALL BE BETWEEN 34 -38 IN HEIGHT MEASURED VERTICALLY FROM THE SLOPED PLANE ADJOINING THE TREAD NOSING. 2 HANDRAILS SHALL BE CONTINUOUS FOR THE FULL LENGTH OF THE STAIRS. (SEE CODE FOR EXCEPTIONS) 3 GUARDS SHALL BE LOCATED ALONG OPEN-SIDED WALKING SURFACES INCLUDING STAIRS, RAMPS AND LANDINGS, THAT ARE LOCATED MORE THAN 30" ABOVE LEVEL BELOW. 4 GUARD HEIGHT SHALL NOT BE LESS THAN 36". 5 GUARD RAIL SHALL HAVE INTERMEDIATED RAILS OR ORNAMENTAL CLOSURES THAT DO NOT ALLOW PASSAGE OF A SPHERE 4" IN DIAMETER. 6 TRIANGLE OPENING FORMED BY THE RAISER, TREAD AND BOTTOM RAIL SHALL BE SUCH THAT A SPHERE 6" DIAMETER CANNOT PASS THROUGH. 7 GUARD RAIL SHALL NOT BE CONSTRUCTED WITH HORIZONTAL RAILS OR OTHER ORNAMENTAL PATTERN THAT RESULTS IN A LADDER EFFECT. 8 HANDRAILS SHALL HAVE A CIRCULAR CROSS SECTION OF 1 1/4" MIN. - 2 " MAX. OR EQUIVALENT. 9 IF HANDRAIL IS NOT CIRCULAR, SEE SECTION R311.7.8.3 FOR GRIP SIZE OPTIONS. (REFERENCE 2018 IRC R311 & R312)
