Left-turning traffic uses a “crossover” lane instead of waiting for oncoming traffic to stop. The design reduces the number of potential conflict points (a traditional diamond interchanges has 26, while a DDI has 14). The DDI design reduces the opportunities for head-on collisions. 11 Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) 12 13 Exit 332 - Final Design Plan 14 Exit 333 - Final Design Plan 15 The DDIs in Rexburg will: Reduce congestion Improve safety and reduce injuries Move high volumes of left-turning traffic Not require the interchange structures to be rebuilt, reducing costs 16 Questions/Q&A What questions do you have about the Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) design? What would be the best way to educate the Rexburg community about the DDIs and how to drive them? 17 Construction Plans Mike McKee, Horrocks 18 Anticipated schedule ITD anticipates construction will occur in summer 2024. 19 Anticipated construction Each interchange will be fully closed, one at a time Each closure will last for approximately 6 weeks One interchange will remain open as a detour route US-20 will remain open during construction 20 Schedule benefits Crews will be able to complete both interchanges in one construction season. ITD will be able to construct the University Blvd. (exit 332) interchange while Madison High School is out for summer break and when BYU-Idaho will be least impacted. Full closures will allow crews more room to work, improving safety. The time period of traffic impacts to drivers is shortened. 21 What comments or questions do you have about construction plans? Do you have any suggestions on how ITD can best inform the community about construction? Questions/Q&A 22 Next Steps Eli Robinson, ITD 23 Next steps: Public meeting tomorrow: March 1 | 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. |Madison High School Meet again before construction begins Spring 2024: begin construction 24 Comment Sheets Questions: DDI design, educating the community Construction plans, keeping the community informed Input: Your comments will help ITD move forward with construction plans 25 Thank you!
