FIRE PUMP SUBMISSION - 21-00656 - 2911 S Frontage Rd - Carpet Direct
November 9, 2022 Stan Crittendon Madison Fire Department 26 N Center Rexburg, ID 83440 RE: Carpet Direct Fire Hydrant Pump Dear Mr. Crittendon: We have completed our design of a pump system to provide fire suppression flow to the new Carpet Direct building. Attached to this letter are design drawings, hydraulic calculations, and specification sheets. As outlined in our pre-design memorandum our approach to meeting the required Carpet Direct fire suppression flow was to place a fire hydrant on the northwest corner of the Carpet Direct property that will be supplied water from Wakeside Lake via a pump. The pump will be operated by a switch located adjacent to the fire hydrant, inside of a lockable electrical control box that will be secured with a Knox padlock. The intake into the lake will be screened and placed at an elevation that will allow pumping during periods where the water level is at its lowest. PVC pipe with a 160-psi pressure rating has been selected with 12-inch pipe used for the intake and 10-inch pipe between the pump station and hydrant. Specification sheets have been included for the fire hydrant, padlock, and pipe. The pre-design memorandum suggested using a dry pipe system that would drain the transmission pipe between the pump station and hydrant when not in use. To allow faster access to water, we have instead designed a system where the transmission pipe will stay wet. As a result, flow will be available almost immediately upon pump startup. Freezing concerns are addressed by burying the pipe a minimum depth of 6 feet. In addition, the pump enclosure will be insulated and heated to maintain temperature above 40° F. Detailed hydraulic calculations were prepared demonstrating the proposed pumping system’s ability to meet the flow requirement. Based on a flow of 1,750 gpm, a TDH of 141 feet is specified for the pump operating point. These criteria were selection to allow the 1,750-gpm flow to be supplied while maintaining 20 psi to the hydrant. A pump has not yet been selected; however, we are working with a pump supplier to select a vertical turbine pump meeting the above performance requirements. We recommend running the pump every 6 months to confirm operation and to exercise the pump. The intake screen should be cleaned and inspected at least every time the pump is tested. It is proposed that construction be completed in the spring when the water level is lowest to facilitate installation of the pump intake.
