Embed panel reinforcing in mortar bed by placing 1 ower Hal f of mortar bed first, then pressing panel reinforcing into place and covering with upper half of mortar bed followed by troweling it smooth. Install panel anchor- =_- at locations indicated and in the same horizontal joints where panel reinforcing occurs. E;:tend panel anchors at least 12" into joint and bend within expansion joints at edges of panels. Attach panel anchors as indicated. Install expansion strips at jambs, heads, mu11ions and other locations indicated. Clean glass unit masonry after mortar- has attained final set but before it has dried on block surfaces by use of scrub brush with stiff fiber bristles and damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners, steel wool or wire brush. END OF SECTION 0427C 8776/RICKS COLLEGE / PLANT SCIENCE REMODEL CSHQA - 7 Mortar Mixes: Comply with ASTM C 270, Proportion Specification, for Type S portland cement -lime mortar. Do not lower freezing point of mortar by use of admixtures or anti -freeze agents. Do not use calcium chloride. For mortar in exterior panels, add waterproofing admixture to mortar mix per directions of admixture manufacturer. For pointing mortar in exterior panels, add waterproofing admixture to mortar mix per directions of admixture manufac- turer. Machine mix mortar to produce a stiff but workable consistency which is drier than mortar for ordinary unit masonry. Installation: Apply a heavy coat of asphalt emulsion to sill; allow to dry before placing mortar. Adhere expansion strips to jambs and heads with gobs of asphalt emulsion, taking care to extend expansion strips to sil 1 . Install concealed mullions within vertical joints of glass block atspacings indicated so that mullions do not touch glass block surface. Connect mullions to head and sill frames as indicated. Set first and succeeding courses of glass unit masonry with completely filled bed and head mortar joints, with no furrowing. Lay-up glass unit masonry plumb with courses level, accurately spaced with joints of width indicated. Joint Widths: 1/4" unless otherwise indicated. Use wedges in mortar .joints. of lower courses where needed to prevent mortar from being squeezed out of joints. Tool exposed .joints slightly concave using a jointer larger than joint width; perform tooling while mortar is still plastic and before it takes final set. Remove wedges, if used, and fill voids with mortar. Remove surplus mortar from face of glass block at time joints are tooled. Install panel reinforcing in horizontal joints in spacing indicated and to run continuously from end to end of panels. Space vertically as follows: Not more than 24" on center. Place panel reinforcing in joints- immediately above and below all openings with glass unit masonry panels. 8776/RICKS COLLEGE / PLANT SCIENCE REMODEL CSHQA - 6 Glass Unit Masonry Accessories: As follows: Panel (Joint) Reinforcement: Ladder -type welded wire units with deformed continuous side rods and plain cross rods spaced not more than 16" o.c., both 0.1483" in diameter; not less than 10' long, and as follows: Hot -Dip Galvanized Steel Wire: ASTM A 82 for un-coated wire and ASTM A 153 for zinc coating applied by hot -dip process to products after fabrication and assembly. Spacing of Side Rods: 2" center to center, unless otherwise indicated. Panel Anchors.: Glass unit masonry manufacturer's standard perforated steel strips, 0.0359" un-coated thickness x 1-3/4'' wide x 24" long, hot -dip galvanized after perforating to comply with ASTM A 153, Class B. Asphalt Emulsion: Water -based asphalt emulsion of type recommended by glass unit masonry manufacturer. Products: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide Karnak: 100 by Karnak: Chemical Corp. Backer rod and sealant are specified in Division-7 section ".Joint Sealers". Plastic Foam Expansion Strips: Polyethylene foam complying with requirements of glass block manufacturer, 3/8" thick x 24'' long x width and color indicated below: Width: 4" wide for panels with channel or chase construc- tion. Width: wide for panels with panel reinforcing. Color: Black. Concealed Steel Mullions: Steel plate complying with ASTM A 36. Dovetail Wire Ties: Trapezoidal -shaped ties of size indicated, fabricated from 3/16" steel wire complying with ASTM A 82 for un-coated wire and with ASTM A 641 for Class 3 zinc coating, attached to 0.1046" thick galvanized strap shaped to engage dovetail slot. Dovetail Slots: Fabricated from 0.0329" galvanized steel, with filler strips.
