HANDRAILS SHALL BE PLACED 34" TO 38" ABOVE THE NOSE OF THE TREADS VERTICALLY TO THE TOP OF THE RAIL. THEY SHALL BE CONTINUOUS THE FULL LENGTH OF THE STAIRS. THE HANDGRIP PORTION SHALL BE NOT LESS THAN 1-1/2" NOR MORE THAN 2" IN CROSS- SECTIONAL DIMENSION. HANDRAILS PROJECTING FROM A WALL SHALL HAVE A SPACE OF NOT LESS THAN 1-1/2" BETWEEN THE WALL AND THE HANDRAIL. ENDS SHALL BE RETURNED TO THE WALL OR TERMINATE IN NEWEL POSTS OR SAFETY TERMINALS.   14. GUARDRAILS SHALL BE PROVIDED TO PROTECT UNENCLOSED SIDES OF ROOMS, CORRIDORS, STAIRS, RAMPS, ETC. WHICH ARE MORE THAN 30 INCHES ABOVE THE FLOOR OR GRADE BELOW. THE GUARDRAIL SHALL BE AT LEAST 36" HIGH AND SHALL HAVE INTERMEDIATE RAILS OR AN ORNAMENTAL PATTERN SUCH THAT A SPHERE OF FOUR (4) INCHES IN DIAMETER CANNOT PASS THROUGH. FIREPLACE CHIMNEYS SHALL EXTEND 2'-0" MINIMUM ABOVE ANY ROOF LINE WITHIN 10'-0" AND MUST BE 3'-0" ABOVE THE ROOF WHERE IT PENETRATES.   16.
