Memorandum
DATE: 1/20/22
TO: Anders Vargason
FROM: Ben Anderson, E.I.T., and Ray McDougal, P.E.
SUBJECT: Floor Joist Repair, I-joist,
1111 Adams Court, Rexburg Idaho
MEMO:
Findings:
It was found that a floor joist, for the second floor, of the house,
referenced above, had been compromised. The joist is near the
separating wall of garage and living space. The bottom of the joist had
received a notched cut which sliced through the bottom flange of the
11-7/8 TJI 110 I-joist and a couple inches of the webbing. This notch
is approximately 3 inches in length. The notch is the middle third of
the joist span. The approximate span is 14 feet and 6 inches. The joist
spacing is 12” o.c. in this section of the floor.
The joist had been previously repaired prior to the involvement of the
South Fork Design Group. In-place repairs of the I-joist were
performed by the builder or a subcontractor of the said builder. The
repairs consist of OSB web fillers on both sides of the I-joist attached
with 1-1/4” long staples. The web fillers are approximately 24” wide.
Attached to the bottom chord is 2x4’s on each side. The 2x4’s are
attached using a 3 inch framing nail. The top chord had a 2x4 attached
on only one side, which would be the side facing the interior of the
home side of the joist.

Analysis:
The OSB web fillers and 2x4 bottom chord gussets are sufficient to
compensate for the notch in the I-joist. The gusseting will allow the
joist to perform within the parameters prescribed by IRC 2018.
Recommendations:
No further repairs required. The repairs are sufficient for the loads
that will be applied to the I-joist.
