We received your letter concerning Department of Education
requirements f or boiler rooms in an educational facility. ,s noted
in your comments, it is necessary f or a boiler room to have an
outside entrance.
I discussed this issue with you previously and it is my
understanding you have discussed this issue further with Steve
Walls, Haneywsll Corporation. The resolution of the proilen that
was proposed and, as I undersand accepted, was the installation of
a roof hatch vut of the boiler room. This will fulfill the
requirements frr an outside entrance to the boiler roam facility.
It should be noted that the shaft extending from the ceiling to the
roof shall be of one hour construction, constructed in a similar
fashion to shafts shown on the drawings for combust.ion air ducts .
We appreciate your assistance on this matter. A copy of this
letter will be sent to Mike pita at I,abar and Industrial Services .
It would be helpful if you would also communicate with Mr. Otto
regarding the acceptance of this course of action. It should be
noted that we also received notification from Mr. Otto that plans

Dear Michael,
Thank you very much for the information you seat to me_ It will help us a great deal. We
have the other references you suggested, except for the UBS Design Guide by Goldberg.
Regarding the Madison High Schaal Boiler Ro proj , ect, when you are at the site yon are
impressed by the fact that right there above fou a-e the BIG tn.sses that suppa.rt e whole roof
for the entire span of that part of the school building. (These trusses have wood fop and bottom
flanges with steed lube cross bracing as a web.) It seems to me that protesting these trusses from
any ire in the boiler room should be the major consideration. See 43 03 (b) 1,6 & 8 and
43 05 (b). Sec. 8Q8 says that: "Every room contaizurtg a boiler ---- shall be separated from
the rest of the building by not less than cone-hour fire-resitive occupancy separation."
To me this says that the boiler roam should be separated from the main building trusses by a
horizontal 1 hr. Bre separation. The bf these trusses is the only place I can find where a
good I hr_ occupancy separation can be physically ach.zered. Consequently, it is my suggestion
that the floor,, walls and bottoms of the trusses ('ceifing) be used as the locaflon for the 1 hr. fli re
occupancy separation needed to separate the boiler roam from the resp of the building while still
protecting its major roof trusses. The sprinkling system heads presently located amour the
roof trusses can be maintained {$ ISt' and addition.l heads brought down through the egn into
the boater roam to provide sprinkler pretection for it separately.
I hope the above may help give you a. 114fle clearer picture of the an -site conditions at the
subject boilerroom location.
Agan, thank you for your help and information.
