SECTION 509 — GUARDRAILS
In Ws section, the r,�de provides forUard"rail prot�c�an for
unenclosed floor and roof openings, own and glared sides. of
stairways, landings and ramps, and porches, which are more
tha4n 30 inches. (762 mm) above grade or a floor or other surface
below. Also, the protection is required for mvfs which are used
other than for service of the building and thus am subject to use
by individua�s walking on the roof. The n�e�►d for guardrails
in thm circurutances is evident, although the arbitrary limit of
30 inches (762 torn) above grads or floor beloW is subject to con-
jecture* Nonetheless.in rhe case of the U.B.C., it is assumed chat
the height of 30 inches (762 mrn) dogs not creme a significa�i
safety hazard.5
The guardrail must be of adequate height to prevent someone
from.fallink over the edge of the protected areas and be design
to prevent someone, including small children, from falling
through under the top rad. Therefore,, the code establishes 42 in-
ches (1()67 mm) as the minimum height which is recognized na-
fionally as the proper height for guardrail protection. 1,he code
also reyui�s that for apen-type. ra�fs, interm�d�ate members be
provided so that a sphere 4 inches {IO2 mm) in diameter cannot
pass ffimugh between the intemwdiate members arequI4reriaent
which prevents small children from failing through the guandrail
assembly. See Figure 5D9-1. The code also lessens the height for
open sides of stairs; they may be protected with a guardrail hav-
ing a height the game as for stair r�lings as provided for,n Sec-
