12 --- The soil at the side is a very dine grained- silly loam to silty clay. mater sinks in from the
ground to the top of the bedrock (lava) and then. follows the top of the kava rock on down tl-ie hill.
This wet silt has very little to no bearing strength as lar as building footings go. The flowing
underground water also presents a problem where it is dammed ofd by footings as it Will rise to
the gro-Lind surface like a spring, flow around the footing or try to get under or through the
footing. Most apartment complexes Have excavated out all of the sift dawn to the taxa rock
surfaee, cleane J. of,.- 11 ti,e �ava xock sur�ace eery aroughly anj poIHCurej 1 e concrete footings on
the kava pock. Others have excavated the silt dawn to the lava rick., backfilled the area with
well compacted pit run graved up to the height of the bottom of the footings and installed a
perforated pipe underdrain system that picked up the underground wader and took it around the
building foundation.

ground to the top of the bedrock (lava) and then follows the top of the lava rock on down the hiffl.
This wet sill has very little to no bearm'g strength as far as building footings go. The flowing,

Most apartment complexes have excavated out all of the silt down to the lava rock surface, cleaned
off the kava rock surface emery thoroughly and poured the concrete foofinors on the lava rock.
