I observed that the contractor had placed a blue moisture barrier, as well as steel reinforcement, in preparation for the concrete slab. I noticed that there were not any dobies, or risers, under the steel reinforcement. I informed the contractor that he would have to wet set them, which I observed being done throughout the duration of the pour. I tested the first truck, and remained for the duration of the pour. We tested the soil and it passed quickly. We were told by Don to return around 12:00pm to test the first lift of pit run. Then at 1:30pm, we tested the 2nd lift of pit run. I then left the lab at 7:17 and made my way to the job site. I arrived there at 7:31 AM and began my inspections. After looking at the rebar I began to set up my equipment. I then waited for the first truck to arrive, which happened at 7:55 AM. I then grabbed the ticket and some water and finished setting up my gear. I then grabbed my sample at 8:15 AM and began my testing. Everything passed without difficulty, and was within spec. After finishing my testing and cleaning up my gear, I stayed and observed the rest of the pour. I then left the job site at 10:12 AM after observing the duration of the pour. The first lift was the edge on the inside of the foundation. I watched as they compacted the soil. When they were ready I took a shot of where they compacted and observed that the compaction was above 95% compaction. I had contractor work on it again before getting it to pass. Later on I tested the pit run. I observed that the contractor used a roller compactor and water added the soil. Observations/ Remarks: I arrived on site at 9:15 a.m. I observed that they had already compacted the southeast and southwest corners of the 5th duplex building from the West. The compacted 3/4” base was very dry as it had been sitting over the weekend. My first test on the Southeast corner came up short at around 92 with only about 2% moisture. The numbers were similar on the southwest corner. I suggested that they add more water and compact it one more time; they did so with a plate compactor, doing passes running east to west and north to south. When I tested the southeast and southwest corners after that compaction run i got passing scores of about 96 with about 4% moisture. I observed that they compacted the other two corners in a similar manner, and they each passed. Observations/ Remarks: I arrived when the concrete driver had approximately 5yds left of concrete. The contractor did not schedule testing before the pour, which caused a lapse in observation of the pour. I tested the concrete and found the results to be within tolerance. I observed the contractor wet setting the anchor bolts and leaving large gaps between the concrete and bolts. I informed the foreman that that practice was not acceptable, and that he needed to fill in the gaps to maintain structural integrity. I observed the contractor rectify the issue. I observed the contractor utilizing a mechanical vibrator to consolidate the concrete. Items observed are in general conformance with approved project documents and jurisdictional requirements. Observations/ Remarks: I arrived at 8:30, and waited until 9:45 for concrete to arrive. Pictures show the rebar that was used. The concrete did have super plasticizer in it, making the slump of 7 acceptable. I reported the results to David. The first two trucks arrived relatively close together, but the third followed the second by about 45 minutes I did not observe any vibrating of the concrete to prevent a cold joint.
