PART 1 - GENERAL
1. "{ DESCRIPTION.9
A. Insulated Reinforced Masonry System
includes:
The lMSI'' Concrete Masonry Units (CMU)'.
Stretcher, Half Stretcher, Squire Half, Right End
or Corner and Left End or Corner.
Surface Banding Cement: IMS1' Structure/Coae.
Insulation: IMSV' Long Insulation Insert, IMSV
Short Insulation Insert.
B. Work included: Provide IMSI@ Concrete
Masonry Units, Insulation Inserts and Surface
Bantling Cement as specified on Drawings and as
needed for a complete and proper installation.
1.2 RELATED WORK SPECIFIED ELSEWHERE
(if applicable and not limited to):
A. Inspection--: division 1
B. Concrete Masonry Unit: Division 4
C. Moisture Protection: Division 7 (where Siding,
etc.)
Q. Finishes: division 9 (where paint or tide, etc.}

1.3 QUALITY ASSURANCE:
A. Use adequate numbers of skilled workmen
thoroughly trained and experienced in the crafts
and specified requirements and methods for the
proper performance of the work of this Section
and shall include..
1 } Skilled Masonry contractor; and,
2) Skilled Plasterinc� contractor.
1.4 SUBMITTALS:
A. Within calendar days after Contractor
has received the Owner's Notice to Proceed,
submit sufficient technical data to suport the
specification requirements.
B_ Mock-ups: As Architect spec
to assure
acceptance of interior and exterior finishes by
Architect and Owner, 4' x 4' panels should be
completed of the suggested final finish and should
be signed as approved by all necessary parties.
1.5 STANDARDS &TEST.S
(Optional, See Note,, Page 1).
3.3 INSTALLATiON:
A. General (All work according to ASTM C 946);
1. Do not commence installation until horizontal
and vertical alignment of foundation is within 1,
of Plumb and the lines shown on the Drawings.
2. Lay only dry masonry snits IMSI®R CMU type.
3. Use masonry saws to cit masonry snits and
necessary electrical openings.
4. Set units plumb,,true to line, level and tightly
and accurately placed,
5. Set first course level, true to line and plumb in
a foil bed of Surface Banding Cement or mortar.
5. Accurately fit units to plumbing, dints,
open€ngs, and other interfaces, patching hales.
7. Keep Bali continually dean, preventing grout
and mortar stains. If groat does ren over, clean
surface immediately.

Structure/CoatO Surface Banding Cer-)nent shall be
in accordance with ASTM C 946:
7. First course of block is leveled and aligned in a
full mortar bed or Surface Bonding Cement
without head joint mortar between blocks.
2. Subsequent block courses shall be in running
bond pattern without mortar.
3. Window and door openings are formed by
conventional procedures, including temporary
shoring dor lintel sections. Vertical expansion
joints should be placed above and below window
and door openings as shown an the drawings.
4. Accurately install all reinforcing grout and steel
with specific attention to the IMSI@ asymmeirieal
core alignment.
5. Wall surface shatl be misted/damp prior to
applying Surface Banding Cement.
fi. Surface Bonding Gement ,bond coat shall be
applied on both sides of wall to a rninimurn
thickness of 3l8" each side exclusive of
decorative applications.
7. Cold joints may, occur at wall cornus, wail
intersections, pilasters or special control joints.
S. Surface Banding Cement may be applied by
spray equipment or trowel, but must be troweled
to impress the fiberglass inta the surface and to
insure proper filling of cracks and adhesion to the
cement block -
9. Surface Banding Cement bond coat shall be
misted once with water within 24 hours of initial
application and not less than twice each 24 hours
for the first 48 hogs in hat or drying cl'imates or
conditions.
74. Surface Bonding Cement shall be applied
when the temperature is between 4D° F. and
110' F. and shall be protected if rain, snow, or
sieei is expected within 48 hours after
application.
11 . Control joints must be instated as required by
appropriate building Dade and shall be raked and
caulked at application.
12. Taps of all wails shall be protected from
moisture intrusion during installation, erring and
finishing.
13. Structure/Coat@Surface Bonding Cernentshall
be carried dawn the exterior of walls, coed over
footing to provide weatherproof continuity with
footing.. walls and slab.
14. Decorative finishes applied to waif 24 hours
after bond coat has cured shall have a bonding
agent added to insure proper adhesion to the
bond coat.
C. Unless otherwise shown on Drawings, day
block in a running bond pattern with vert cal joints
located at center of masonry units in alternate
courses below. Take care to vertically aIign
electrical raceway hobs as blocks are laid.
D. Do not use chipped or broken units- if such
units are Joundl Architect may require their
removal and replacement at no cast to the Owner.
E. Work Included:

masonry units, rebar and grout, Surface Bonding
Cement, IMSJ;a Insulation Inserts and equipment
necessary to' 'construct the IMSIO Insulated
Masonry Walls_
2. Mason shall follow general guidelines as

Masonry Industry Advancement Committee.,

1.6 PRODUCT HANDLING AND STORAGE:
A. IMS10 Concrete Masonry Units: Units should
be stored above ground on a level platform which
allows air to circulate under stacked units. Units
should be covered and/or protected against
wetting prior to use.
B. IMS10 Structure/Coat° Surface Bonding
Cement: Deliver to jobsite in bags bearing the
manufacturer's label and instructions for use.
Store bags on site ire a dry, covered environment.
C. IMS10 Insulation Inserts: Deliver to jobsite in
ariginal protective bags. Protect against wetting
and prolonged exposure to sun until installation.
1.7 PRODUCT AVAILABILITY:
(Note: The IMS10 Insulated reinforced Masonry
System is available from local licensed dealers or
Insulated Masonry Systems, Inc., 7234 E.
Shoeman Lane, Suite 1, Scottsdale, AZ 85251.)
A. IMSIO Concrete Masonry Units, Insulation
Inserts and StrUcture/Coat Surface Bending
Cement are available through local IMSIO Dealer r.
B. IMS10 Concrete Masonry Units are mailable
from block producers.
C. IMSIO Insulation Inserts are available from
Insulated Masonry Systerns, Inc.
D. IMSI@Structure/CoatOSurface bonding Cement
is available from insulated Masonry Systems, Inc.
PART Z - PRODUCTS
2. 1 CONCRETE MASONRY UNITS:
AJ,
From an applicable block manufacturing plant,
Provide IMS 10 Concrete Masonry Units complying
with ASTM C 90, Grade N, Type 1, IMS10 block.
1. Where dimensions are not indicated an
D-rawings, provide 8"x811x1 C" units.
2. Provide accessory shapes, ends and half block
as indicated or required.
2.2 REINFORCEMENT AND ACCESSORIES:
A.
Comply with the
following
minimums:

Bars. ASTM A 615,
Grade
44 or 60, deformed
bars.
2� Fabricate reinforcement in accordance with
recommendations contained in CRSI "Manual of
Standard practices."
B. Shims, if needed, shall be corrosion-resistant
metal, or Surface Banding Cement or mortar, and
shajl have a minimum compressive strength of
Z000 psi. Shims should be installed according
A$TM C 940 and rnariufacturcr's dir+zctions-
C. Accessories such as anchors, flashings and
bolts shad be installed according to the
Architectural Drawings and Design details.
2.3 GROUT (Ingredients):
A. Cement.- Portland Cement Complying with
ASTM C 15a, Type 1.
B. Aggregate: Provide clean, sham, well graded
aggregate free from injurious amounts of dust,
lumps, shale, alkali, surface coatings and Organic
matter_
C. Admixtures: ND admixtures unless specifically
approved in advance by Architect.
D. Water: Use potable wafter free of injurious acid,
alkalis, and organic materials.
E. Reinforcement: Reinforced construction
required in Seismic Zones 2, 3, and 4.
F. Grout: Grouting shall comply with UBC,
Section 2404 (f).
2.4 SURFACE BONDING CEMENT (Ingredients):
A. IMSPStructure/Coat@ Surface Bonding Cement
is a proprietary mix of Portland, Cement, silica
sand, and type "E" Alkaline resistant fiberglass
and shall have only the addition of potable water
as specified on the fag label.
B. Mineral oxides may be added to the Surface
Bonding Cement mix to provide various colors as
desired and specified by Architect.
G. Mixing steall be according to ASTM C 946 and
manufacturer's directions.
2.5 INSULATION INSERTS:
A. Only inserts of the type, in size
configuration, carrying mar,ufacturer's,
logotype imprint shall be used.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
and
IMS10
3.1 PROJECT CONDITIONS:
A. Examine area and conditions under which work
of this Section will be performed. Correct
conditions detrimental to timely and proper
completion of the work. Do not proceed until
unsatisfactory conditions are corrected.
3.2 ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
A. Apply Structure/Coag Surface Banding
Cement when sir temperature is above 40° F. and
below 110° F. unless the international Masonry
industries Recommended Practices and Guide
Specifications for Cold Weather Construction ars
followed.
B. Protect masonry construction from direct
exposure to wind and sup when erected in
amhient air tpmperatures'1n excess of less than
50°/0.
C. Protect Insulation inserts from prolonged
exposure to weather elements and sin.
