N C F 2 0 2 0 PLUS AND WALL STRENGTH
WHY SHOULD I WORRY ABOUT WALL STRENGTH?
Your walls are the main structural component of your home. In wood frame
construction, the weight of the roof and any snow on the roof push down on the walls with
a compressive force. Strong winds and mind gusts impose lateral loads onto your house walls
that tend to distort the walls with a shearing force. Building codes require that walls be
designed to withstand these loads. However, when walls are bul"It to minimum standards,,
w safe, you mai sense wall creaking during high winds or shaking when doors are
slammed or the kids are actively romping abut.
WHAT IS A SHEARING FORCE?
A shearing farce on a wall tends to.
distort the wall from it's on shape as a '
rectangle info a parallelogram. To test a fj
wall's resistance to the she forces
imposed by wind loading., engineers use a
"rackang test."' J—J

of the wall is secured to the frame and a load (exaggerated)
hon'zontal (lateral) farce is appfiied at one
upper corner_ The force is increased in 400 1b. increments until the wall structure fails.
WHAT IS TBE EFFECT OF NCFI 20Z0 PLUS INSULATION ON WALL STRENGTH?
In a series of racking tests*,, walls with and without spray -applied polyurethane foam
insulation were compared. Two exterior facing rnaterials were tested:
(1) Vinyl siding over 15 -Ib. building paper; and
(2) 6/s -inch tenured plywood siding -
All wall panels were faced with V2-1-nch sheetrock on the interilb or side and used 16 inch stud
spacing. For the stud wall panels that were insulated With spray -applied polyurethane foam,
the spud cavities were essentially completely filled with foam of 1.5 lb/ft' density.

As the graph indicates, stud
walls filled with spray -applied
polyurethane foam add significant
strength to hams walls. Furthermore,
for each load applied, the foam filled
walls deformed less and offered
greater resilience.

EQUIPMENT AND COMPONENT RATIO
Standard Pol-vurethane Spray Equipment is required. NCFT 3,68-R is connected to the resin pumps with IVGFI 368-A,
being Connected to the isocyanate pumps. The proportioning pump ratio is I to 1. C'rusmer preheater temperature should
be at I30°F. Hose temperature should be approximateiy 11f7°F to give good pattern. Equipment which oprteS
higher pressures will require slightly lower temperature settings.
