Dear City Council Members,
We would first like to thank you for the service you provide to our community. We know it must be difficult to try to
find balance in the decisions you make so that all feel that they have been heard and represented. The issue that we
would like to communicate with you about concerns the recent changes to the zoning of the parcel of land on 12-West
that currently belongs to the Birch Family. This parcel of land is in the middle of agricultural fields that are bordered by
stable family country neighborhoods to the north and the south.
In the most recent City Planning and Zoning Meeting a change from its current designation of RR2 to a combination of
LDR1, LDR2, and LDR3 was recommended by the committee. It is disheartening for us to see a piece of land that is
currently zoned for a rural neighborhood, where families could really put down their roots for several years, is likely to
be turned into a transitional neighborhood where individuals or families are there temporarily, often for a very short
season. While we understand that the zoning of LDR1 likely brings longer-term citizens and families to our area, the
LDR2 and LDR3 zones have the potential to bring less stability. Statistics show that there is currently a surplus of these
types of dwellings in our city(about 70%of the homes in Rexburg are rentals and almost 30%of these units are
empty). We would therefore implore you to vote against the proposed zoning change for this piece of land which would
contribute to the overwhelming rental community that is encroaching our city.
We fear that if these types of zoning changes continue to be made and the building of small dwellings for temporary
occupants continues at its current pace that we may need to change the Rexburg City Motto of"America's Family
Community,"to "America's Temporary Transitional Small Family Community." There is an opportunity here to send a
message to all, pro-development and pro-preservation,that growth in the City of Rexburg is going to be measured, with
opportunities for all sizes and types of neighborhoods to flourish, according to prudent zoning. Let's not let this
opportunity pass us by.
Thank you for your consideration of these ideas.
Respectfully,
i
