Based on information provided, five washing machines are to be supported above the floor on a platform
of framed construction less than 24" off the floor. The washers have an average volume of 4.67 cf with a
conservative loaded weight of 3001bs and an average weight of 550 lbs. Vertical vibration loads are
estimated to be approximately 1/3 the total operating weight or 1450 lbs per washer and 7100 lbs for the
entire platform.
Ten stud posts are provided in the platform framing front and back spaced at 16" o.c.. The top of the
platform is 3/4" plywood over a 2x4 plate that sits on the 2x4 stud posts which sit on a 2x4 plate that bears
on the floor.
Recommendations
A stud grade 2x4 can carry approximately 4200 lbs in compression. Total capacity of vertical studs is
approximately 42000 lbs.
Assure that each washing machine connection point is thru the single top plate and attached per the
manufacturer's requirements. It is recommended that these connections have a rubber mount to minimize
the vibration transmitted to the support platform and floor below.
Provide full height support from the basement up to the platform that supports the washing machines.
Block between floors such that vertical loads are transmitted continuously to the foundation. The sides of
the platform and the framing below shall be sheathed with %" 4SB with 8d nails at 4" o.c. and 12" o.c. in
the field. Blocking at panel edges is required.
