Model RFC series sprinklers must not be installed in ceilings with positive pressure in the space above. Ensure that the 4 slots in the cup are open and unobstructed following installation. Model RFC series sprinklers are shipped with a wrench-able protective cap that should remain on the sprinkler until the sprinkler system is placed in service following construction. Model RFC series sprinklers can be installed without removing the wrench-able protective cap using the Model W3 wrench. Alternatively, Model RFC series sprinklers can be installed using the Model FC wrench by temporarily removing the protective cap during installation of the sprinkler. The use of any other wrench to installed Model RFC series sprinklers is not permitted and may damage the sprinkler. Fully insert the Model W3 wrench over the cap until it reaches the bottom of the cup, or the Model FC wrench over the sprinkler until the wrench engages the body. Do not wrench any other part of the sprinkler/cup assembly. The Model W3 and FC wrenches are designed to be turned with a standard 1/2” square drive. Tighten the sprinkler into the fitting after applying a PTFE based thread sealant to the sprinkler’s threads. Recommended installation torque is 8 to 18 ft-lbs (11 to 24 N-m) for 1/2” thread sprinklers and 14 to 20 ft-lbs (19 to 27 N-m) for 3/4” thread sprinklers. Do not exceed the maximum recommended torque. Exceeding the maximum recommended torque may cause leakage or impairment of the sprinkler. Use care when inserting or removing the wrench from the sprinkler to avoid damage to the sprinkler. Install the cover plate by hand by pushing the cover plate into the cup and turning the cover in the clockwise direction until it is tight against the ceiling. Application Model RFC series sprinklers are intended for installation where residential sprinklers are permitted or required by NFPA 13, NFPA 13R, and NFPA 13D. The sprinklers are concealed pendent residential sprinklers. Model RFC 30 and RFC30LL sprinklers are available in ordinary temperature classification for installation where the Maximum Ceiling Temperature does not exceed 100°F (38°C). Model RFC43, RFC43LL, RFC49, RFC49LL, RFC58, and RFC76 sprinklers are available in either ordinary or intermediate temperature classification for installation where the Maximum Ceiling Temperature does not exceed 100°F (38°C) or 150°F (66°C), respectively. Approval Organizations • Listed by Underwriters Laboratories Inc. and UL certified for Canada (cULus) Patents US Patent No. 7,841,418 Products Description The Model DH56 are quick response extended cover- age sidewall dry sprinklers for use in light hazard applica- tions. The Model DH56 dry sprinkler with SWC cover plate is a concealed sprinkler that uses Reliable’s push on/thread off sidewall cover. This sprinkler has the cup factory mounted and is shipped with a bulb protector that protects the 3mm frangible glass bulb during shipping and post installation fin- ishing operations. The DH56 can be combined in the field with the FP Escutcheon to make a recessed dry sprinkler. The SWC cover plate and FP recessed escutcheons have ½” adjustment. The SWC cover plate is attached with 135 & 165 degree solder. In the event of a fire the rising ambient DH56 HSW Concealed with SWC cover plate DH56 HSW DH56 HSW FP Recessed DH56 HSW/HB temperature melts the solder and the cover plate is ejected away by springs exposing the 3mm frangible glass bulb. The use of a 3mm bulb allows quick response which enables the sprinkler to apply water to a fire sooner than standard response sprinklers of the same temperature rating. Model DH56 dry sprinklers are intended for use in dry and preaction systems to protect areas subjected to freez- ing temperatures and unheated portions inside and outside buildings. See Fig. 8 for guidelines on using dry sprinklers in wet systems. 2. Environments wherein dry sprinklers are employed can be corrosive. For this reason, Model DH56 dry sprinklers have a special wax fillet placed in the gap between the cup that supports the bulb and the wrenching boss. This wax will not interfere with the operation of the sprinkler, and it prevents contaminants from entering the internal portion of the drop nipple. The wax must not be removed. Application The Model DH56 is a horizontal sidewall dry sprinkler intended for installation in light hazard occupancies in ac- cordance with NFPA 13. These sprinklers are designed to provide fire protection in long and narrow spaces such as hallways, corridors, decks and rooms up to 28 feet (8,5m) wide and 10 feet (3m) long. They are rated for 250 psi (17,2 bar) and can be mounted between 4 and 12 inches (102 and 305mm) down from the ceiling. General Installation Instructions Model DH56 dry sprinklers must be installed only in stan- dard (ANSI B 16.3 class 150 and ANSI B 16.4 class 125) pipe tees in the horizontal position, even at branch line ends. They should not be installed into elbows or pipe couplings located on drop nipples to the sprinklers. For these and other fittings including CPVC, the dry sprinkler should be installed into a fitting to allow protrusion into the fitting in ac- cordance with the diagrams. The “A” dimension of the dry sprinkler, which extends into a freezing zone from wet pipe systems, should be selected to provide, as a minimum, the specified lengths in inches shown in Fig. 8. Caution: Do not install Model DH56 HSW Dry sprinklers into CPVC adapter fittings or tees that have an internal obstruction. This will damage the sprinkler and /or the fitting. Refer to Fig. 9. DH56 HSW To install the DH56 HSW dry sprinkler cut a 21/8” diameter hole in the wall as shown in Fig. 4. Use the Model F3R in- stallation wrench (see Fig. 3) on the square boss to tighten the sprinkler until it is secured in the sprinkler fitting1. Apply a PTFE based sealant to the sprinkler threads before install- ing in the sprinkler. Installation is completed by removing the orange glass bulb-protector and assembling the slip-on escutcheon to the sprinkler’s can. DH56 HSW/HB To install the DH56 HSW/HB dry sprinkler cut a 2½” diam- eter hole in the wall as shown in Fig. 5. Use the Model F3R installation wrench (see Fig. DH56 HSW Recessed with FP Escutcheon To install the DH56 HSW dry sprinkler with the FP Escutch- eon as a recessed sprinkler cut a 25/8” diameter hole in the wall as shown in Fig. 6. Temporarily remove the plastic pro- tective cap, and then use the Model XLO2 wrench1 (see Fig. 2) to tighten the sprinkler until it is secured in the sprin- kler fitting. Note: The Model XLO2 wrench has a notch in it to accommodate the deflector top. This wrench can only be inserted one way. Care must be taken not to damage the deflector during tightening. Apply a PTFE based seal- ant to the sprinkler threads before installing in the sprinkler. It is recommended that the sprinkler be protected during plastering and painting operations by reinstalling the plastic protective cap. Installation is completed by removing the protective cap and inserting the push-on escutcheon. Turn clockwise to adjust the escutcheon against the wall. DH56 HSW Concealed with SWC Cover Plate To install the DH56 HSW dry sprinkler with the SWC cover- plate as a concealed sprinkler, cut a 21/8” diameter hole into the wall as shown in Fig. 7. Temporarily remove the plastic protective cap, and then use the Model XLO2 wrench1 (see Fig. Installation is completed by removing the protective cap and inserting the coverplate. Coverplate as- semblies provide ½” (13mm) of adjustment. Final adjust- ment is made by turning the coverplate clockwise until the skirt flange makes full contact with the wall surface. Cover removal requires turning in the counter-clockwise direction. Concealed coverplate assemblies are listed only for use with specific sprinklers. The use of any other concealed wall sprinkler or the use of the SWC coverplate on any sprinkler with which it is not specifically listed will void all guarantees, warranties, listings and approvals. Note: DH56 and DH56 Recessed Sprinklers have orange bulb protectors to minimize bulb damage during shipping, handling, and installation. REMOVE THIS PROTECTION AT THE TIME THE SPRINKLER SYSTEM IS PLACED IN SER- VICE FOR FIRE PROTECTION. Removal of the protectors before this time may leave the bulb vulnerable to damage. RASCO wrenches are designed to install sprinklers when covers are in place. REMOVE PROTECTORS BY UNDO- ING THE CLASP BY HAND. DO NOT USE TOOLS TO RE- MOVE THE PROTECTORS. 1 Installation Wrenches: Throughout this technical bulletin, Reliable has specified specific installation wrenches for use on each version of our sprinklers. A pipe wrench may also be used to install a dry sprinkler provided that it only interfaces with the steel outer tube of the assembly (Item #8 on fig 10). Keep in mind that a pipe wrench will incorporate a large amount of torque into the final assembly. This torque will have to be matched or exceeded upon the sprinkler’s removal at a later date. 3. The posi- Model DH80 Dry sprinkler with Model SWC cover plate Model DH80 Dry sprinkler with Standard escutcheon Model DH80 Dry sprinkler with Model FP recessed escutcheon Model DH80 Dry sprinkler with Model HB escutcheon tion of the sealing washer is controlled by a fluid-filled glass bulb thermal element at the opposite end of the sprinkler as- sembly. When installed on a wet-pipe sprinkler system in ac- cordance with Fig. 8, the Model DH80 sprinkler is installed with the thermal element in a protected space that may be subject to freezing temperatures and the inlet orifice located in a heated area that is separated from the protected space. Model DH80 sprinkler may also be installed on dry-pipe and preaction sprinkler systems. Operation of the sprinkler’s thermal element allows the sealing washer to move out of the inlet orifice admitting water from the supply piping. Ma- terial Specifications for the Model DH80 Dry sprinkler are provided in Fig. 11. 2. The sprinkler uses a fast-response thermal element and is available with a temperature rating of 155°F (68°C), 175°F (79°C), or 200°F (93°C). Model SWC cover plates include a conical concealed cover plate that is attached to a skirt with temperature sensitive solder. Operation of the Model SWC cover plate occurs when the solder melts due to an increase in the surrounding temperature, allowing the cover plate to fall away and exposing the Model DH80 Dry sprinkler. Model SWC cover plates are available with a Temperature Rating of either 135°F (57°C) for use with Ordinary Temperature Classification [155°F (68°C)] sprinklers or 165°F for use with Intermediate Temperature Classification [175°F (79°C) and 200°F (93°C)] sprinklers. Model DH80 dry sprinklers have a special wax fillet placed in the gap between the cup that supports the bulb and the wrenching boss. This wax will not interfere with the operation of the sprinkler, and it prevents contaminants from entering the internal portion of the drop nipple. The wax must not be removed. Application The Model DH80 Dry sprinkler is a horizontal sidewall dry sprinkler intended for installation in light hazard occupan- cies in accordance with NFPA 13. These sprinklers are de- signed to provide fire protection in long and narrow spaces such as hallways, corridors, decks and portions of rooms up to 28 feet (8.5 m) wide and 14 feet (4.3 m) long. They are rated for 175 psi (12 bar) and can be mounted between 4 and 12 inches (102 and 305 mm) down from the ceiling. Model DH80 Dry sprinklers shall not be installed into el- bows, welded outlets, or gasket sealed outlets. In all installa- tions, including into CPVC piping, the dry sprinkler shall be installed with protrusion into the fitting in accordance with the installation diagrams in this Bulletin. Installation of the Model DH80 Dry sprinkler is not recom- mend in copper pipe systems, as this may reduce the life expectancy of the sprinkler. Do not install Model DH80 Dry sprinklers with the standard (long) inlet fitting into CPVC fit- tings that have an internal obstruction (see Fig. 9); this will damage the sprinkler, the fitting, or both. Model DH80 Dry sprinklers are available with a short “PL” inlet fitting for instal- lation on CPVC fittings of wet pipe sprinkler systems only. Model DH80 Dry sprinklers connected to wet-pipe systems must be installed with the Exposed Minimum Barrel Length required by Fig. 8 located in a Heated Area. A clip is provided to protect the glass bulb thermal ele- ment from damage. The clip is factory installed on the sprin- kler. The clip should remain in place during installation of the sprinkler and be removed when the sprinkler system is placed in service. Model DH80 Dry sprinklers with the Model FP recessed escutcheon or the Model SWC cover plate are also supplied with a cap that can be used to provide addi- tional protection for the sprinkler during painting or finishing. The cap can be installed without removing the clip. Both the cap and the clip must be removed when the sprinkler sys- tem is placed in service. Use the following steps for installation: 1. The centerline of the Model DH80 Dry sprinkler must be installed between 4-5/8” (118 mm) and 12-5/8” (321 mm) vertically below the finished ceiling so that the top of the deflector is not less than 4“ (102 mm) or more than 12” (305 mm) from the finished ceiling. A hole must be cut in the wall directly in-line with the outlet of the tee. See the Installation Data table for the recommended hole di- ameter based on the escutcheon or cover plate option selected. 2. Apply pipe joint compound or Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) tape to the threads of the sprinkler’s inlet fitting. 3. Install the sprinkler in the tee using the installation wrench specified in the Installation Data table. The Model F3R wrench is designed to be inserted into the groves in the sprinkler’s wrench boss as shown in Fig. 3. The Model XLO2 wrench is designed to fit into the cup and engage the wrench boss as shown in Fig. 2. Do NOT wrench any part of the sprinkler assembly other than the wrench boss. When inserting or removing the wrench from the sprinkler, care should be taken to prevent damage to the sprinkler. The sprinkler is then tightened into the pipe fit- ting to achieve a leak free connection. The recommend- ed minimum to maximum installation torque is 22-30 lb-ft (30 – 40 N-m). 3a.
