Hess Heritage Museum
to celebrate 20th
birthday on July 4
The annual Pioneer Country Fair will be
held at the Hess Heritage Museum in
Ashton July 4.
Twenty years ago a ribbon -cutting cere-
mony was held at the museum founded by
Dan and Mary Hess of Rexburg and Ashton
to preserve the pioneer heritage of the
Upper Snake River Valley and the early pio-
neers of the West.
To commemorate the 20th anniversary,
this year's country fair will feature many
pioneer skill demonstrations, including
spinning and weaving, lace making, soap
making, pioneer rope making and arrow-
head carving. The Fort Henry Buckskinners
will be there as well as the Cowboy poets of
Idaho.
A special attraction will be a pump organ
concert to be presented at the Heritage
Home at 11:30 a.m. and again at 2 p.m.
The fair will be open from 11 a.m. to 6
p.m. with demonstrations going on from
11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Admission is $3 for
adults and $1 for children under 12.
The museum is located one mile south of
Ashton and 1/4 mile west of U.S. Highway
20 on the Fish Hatchery Road. The address
is 3409 E.1200 North.
At the time the museum opened in 1982,
it consisted of the 19th century Heritage
Home, which was restored and furnished in
the homestead period, and the Carriage
House with a few artifacts. Dan Hess was
born in the home in 1919.
The museum has now expanded to seven
buildings of exhibits that include the
Summer Kitchen, Social Hall with its
exhibits that depict 19th and early 20th cen-
tury life and the Hangar, containing the his-
tory of snow, air and land travel.
The museum includes a wildlife exhibit
as well as a one -room schoolhouse. The
implement barn reflects the history of agri-
culture through a large collection of horse-
drawn farm implements, a blacksmith shop
and a mural depicting that history.
