Statement on BYU-Idaho Announcement to Construct Married
Student Housing
August 1, 2002
"Last night Brigham Young University Idaho announced plans to construct 156 married student
housing units. While we recognize the University's right to govern its own affairs and to act in
its best interests in accordance with governance from its Board of Trustees, nevertheless the
Rexburg Planning and Zoning Commission is severely disappointed in the decision, especially
in light of the monumental effort the City and its Planning and Zoning Commission have made
in trying to facilitate private sector development of such housing.
We implore the University and its Board of Trustees to show the same kind of sensitivity to
mitigating potential negative impacts on the local community as is done elsewhere. The
Planning and Zoning Commission also wishes to encourage the private sector to rise to the
occasion now that this announcement has been made and develop the private sector housing
that has been approved so our local economy may remain strong."

Gentlemen:
Attached as a Word file is a public statement read at last night's P&Z
meeting. It was read after unaminous conceptual approval by a majority
of the Commission before the meeting (2 came late) to make such a
statement. Aside from its actual content, the statement was
specifically intended to send a message that someone is willing to stand
up for what is right and publicly criticize the University's actions
when they need to be for the greater good of the community. In the
absence of no response or "controversy", they will only assume that
their actions are not only correct but also justified - a perception we
can ill afford to have them believe.
I hope everyone is okay with this and that it doesn't create any
additional burdens for the City or you personally. You can always yank
my chain if I get too far out of line or you otherwise feel it to be
necessary.
I also had a long conversation yesterday with Glenn Walker. I
appreciated being able to understand the circumstances which will place
great demands on his time and availability. We feel to honor his
request to step down from the Commission and are grateful for the great
service he provided.
In talking with Glenn, we discussed potential candidates for his
replacement. From my perspective, the priorities of selection are that
first it should be someone from that particular area of town, secondly
that it would best be female if possible to get a greater mix and range
of input on the commission, and lastly that it be someone with both
qualifications and interest in providing this assistance.
Accordingly we came up with the following list of candidates for your
consideration. These are only our idea in an effort to help you - if
you already have others in mind we certainly support that. The
candidates are Judy (Keith) Steiner, Susan (Brent) Mendenhall, Barbara
(Frank) Bell, Jerry Grover, and Doug Ladle.
Let us know how we can help further or if we're out of line in making
such public statements. Many thanks...
