The framing and connection details of buildings located ER Seismic Design Categories D1 and
D2 shall be in accordance with Sections R602.1 1.1 through R602.11.3.

Braced wall Line sills shah be anchored to concrete or masonry foundations in accordance
with Sect'ons R403.1.6 and R602.1 1. For all buildings in Seismic Design Categories DI and
D2 and townhouses in Seismic Design Category C, plate washers, a minimum of 11'4 inch
by 3 inches by 3 inches (6.4 mm by 76 mm by 76 mm) in size, shall be provided between
the foundation sill plate and the nut. - -

Interior braced wall lines shah be fastened to floor and roof framing in accordance with
Table R602,3(l), to required foundations in accordance with Section R602.1 1. 1, and in
accordance with the following requirements:
1. Floor joists parallel to the top plate shall be tie --nailed to the tap plate with of least 8d
nails spaced a maximum of 6 inches (15a mm) on center.
2. Tap plate lips shad be face -nailed with at least sight 16d,nalIs 0n each side of the
splice.

Where stepped foundations occur,
the fallowing requirements appy:
Where the height of a required braced waft panel thatextends from foundation to
floor above varies more than 4 feet (1220 mm), the bracedWail panel shatl be
constructed in accordance with Figure R602.1 1.3.

403.1.6 Foundation anchorage.
When braced wall panels are supported directly on continuous foundations, the wail woad
sill plate or cold -formed steel bottom track shill be anchored to the foundation in
accordance with this section.
The woad safe plate at exterior wails on monolithic slabs and wood sill plate shall be
anchored to the foundation with anchor bolts spaced a maximum of 6 feet (1829 mm) on
center. There shall be a m nimum of two bolds per plate section with one bolt located not
more than 12 inches (305 mm) or less than seen bolt diameters from each end of the palate
section. in seismic Design categories a1 and C32, anchor bolts shall also be spaced at 6
feet (1829 mm) on center and located within 12' inches (3Q5 mm) from the ends of each
plate section at inferior braced wall lines when required by Section R602.10.9 to be
supported on a continuous foundation. Bolts shall be at least 112 inch {12.7 mm} in diameter
and shall expend a minimum of 7 inches (178 mm) into masonry or concrete, interior bearing
walk sole plates on monolithic slab foundations shall be positively anchored with approved
fasteners. A nut and washer shall be tightened an each bolt to the plate. Sills and safe
plates shad be protected against decay and termites where required by Sections R3182nd
R319.
Cold -formed steel framing systems shall be fastened to the wood sill plates or anchored
directly to the foundation as required in Section R505.3. 1 or R603_ 1 . 'I .
Exception: Foundation anchor straps, spiced as required to ,provide equivalent
anchorage to 112-inch-diameter (12.7 mm) anchor buffs.

In addition to the requirements of Section R403.1.6, the following requirements shadl
apply to wood light -frame structures in Seismic Design Categories D'I and D2 and wood
light -frame townhouses in Seismic Design'Category C.
� . Plate washers conforming to Section, R602.1 1.1 sha[f be used on each bolt.
2. Interior braced wall plates shall have anchor }jolts spaced at not more than 6 feet
(1829 mm) on center and located within 12 inches (305 mm) from the ends of
each plate section when supported on a continuous foundation.
3. Inferior bearing wall sole plates shad have anchor bolts spaced at not more than 6
feet (1829 mm) on center and located within 12 inches (305 mm) from the ends of
each plate section when supported on a continuous foundation.
4. The maximum anchor boli spacing shall be 4 feet (1219 mm) dor buildings over

change added the 3x3 requirement to the
2003 IRC. The reason liven for the code change was to correspond to the 2000 NIEMRP Section 12.5,3
