My family and I are very long term residents of Rexburg. This is regarding Ordinance 1243. Seeing how the city works, their decision has already been made and tonight is nothing more than to formalize their decision. I would like to congratulate the city on officially weaponizing covid 19. Now, if a business owner gets on the bad side of the city, “oops, you’ve been caught violating the city face mask ordinance” so sorry, bye bye business. Of course after this passes, no disgruntled employee will take advantage of this ordinance to turn in their company if they don’t get a raise or if they feel they missed out on a promotion. Of course no teenager, upset at their parents, would abuse this ordinance to get back at their parents for “unfair” treatment. Of course no neighbor would turn in another neighbor using this ordinance to settle a dispute. Of course this will be used properly in every case and no one will take advantage of the door that was just created to fine people and shut down businesses. Do I think that the majority of people will abuse this ordinance? Of course not but all it takes is a small determined minority to take a bad situation and use it to destroy families, neighbors, and livelihoods. If they feel it necessary to promote wearing masks and proper hygiene, then by all means do so. I have personally worked for Mayor Merrill several years ago and have seen and been the recipient of some of his less than above board business activities so forgive me if I do not trust the city to use this properly. We have learned from sad experience that after politicians vote themselves more power, it is their natural disposition to abuse that power. If not the current city government, then someone in the future is guaranteed to move this decision forward and violate all that they vowed to protect.
