SMTP machelle2439@gmail.com Deborah Lovejoy Inbox City Council Meeting Comments November 18, 2020 I would like to add my voice to many other Madison county residents in asking the city council and the mayor to NOT enforce a city-wide mask mandate. For every medical professional, and scientific study that says homemade cloth masks stop the spread of covid-19, there are an equal number of credible medical professionals and scientific studies that say otherwise. With even the experts unable to agree on the effectiveness of masks, local governments are not justified in restricting citizens ability to move about freely and breathe fresh air. Such a mandate also exercises undue control over local business owners. Not only are you trying to dictate what business owners do in their private property, but this mandate would unfairly single out local businesses for enforcement, and allow larger businesses such as Walmart to not be at risk of losing their business license. You would not be able to enforce this fairly as constitutionally required. Furthermore, although Covid cases are on the rise, the fact remains that the percent of total infections, and more importantly the number of deaths, remain remarkably low when seen as a percentage of the total population. In speaking with numerous employees at Madison Memorial Hospital, they have indicated that our hospital is NOT overwhelmed with covid cases. Additionally, you have to ask yourself where such restrictions would end. Although it is reported that the new vaccines rolling out have a 95% or higher effectiveness, anyone with critical thinking skills would have to doubt this claim. We've had decades upon decades to improve the effectiveness of the flu shot, and we still hover around 30% effectiveness. Furthermore, without time to safety test the new vaccine, and providing the vaccine makers with immunity from any negative side effects, both the safety and the efficacy of the new vaccines can be called into question. So if you put this mask mandate into effect, when would you rescind it? When the vaccine proves to have 90% effective rate among the population? What if it doesn't? What if it proves to have a much lower rate, like the 30% effectiveness we see with the flu shot? What if Americans are, rightfully, avoiding the vaccine because of safety concerns over the fact that it was rushed to market, and concerns over harmful side effects? How long would you keep this mask mandate in effect? And if covid cases rise seasonally, just as cold and flu cases rise seasonally (even with a readily available flu vaccine), would you reinstate this mask mandate on a seasonal basis? Would you be seeking ever more restrictive ordinances and mandates to stem the tide of this flu-like illness with a 99% recovery rate that is affecting a small number of the overall population? Our elected officials have taken an oath to uphold the Constitution. The founding fathers made it clear that the purpose of government is to protect our rights not to keep us safe. It has been said that anyone who would give up their liberties in exchange for security, loses both. Please hear the voices of the many residents who are voicing their concern on this matter. Please represent the people who elected you, and truly serve the people you have taken an oath to serve.
