(171 Birch Ave - up between the hospital and Lincoln school.) I understand that the mask mandate is coming up on the agenda again. I am firmly in favor of doing all that we can to enforce a mask mandate. The mayor called on us to avoid the city requiring wearing a mask and enforcing it by voluntarily wearing them. He made a good faith effort to accomplish the needed ends of protecting the vulnerable in our community by inviting us. We appear to have refused to respond adequately. The onus is on the Mayor to make good on his “or else.” Let me explain my feelings. I am concerned about how lightly we have taken this pandemic. I have neighbors who are extremely high risk for complications with COVID. Indeed my wife and I are beginning to be in that category -my wife and myself. A number of weeks ago I drafted, but never sent, a letter to Broulims and Walmart expressing my concern that they had appeared to have abandon any enforcement efforts. And that if I had to be at risk to go shopping, I planned on going a) somewhere they better respected my health or b) at least had better prices (IF). But the time I was about to deliver it to Walmart, they had begun to do better in monitoring entering patrons. I haven’t been to Broulim’s myself since. But the other business I have patronized lately have been very casual about acting responsibly to protect their patrons. I know that people are up in arms about masks infringing on their personal freedoms. The city and other governments are right to be cautious about this. However, as citizens, this seems foolish to waste our capital over this fight. Far more important are issues of religious freedom, and the 2nd amendment. For an example of how weak these objections are, we readily accept regulation of other environments and circumstances which might easily make us ill: Restaurant food handlers, and public urination are two that I can think about right off the bat. Objecting to masks, especially a voluntary call to wear them, tends to brand people who could wear them and don’t as foolish, selfish and unthoughtful, rather than as guardians of the constitution. At the last city meeting I attended in which this was discussed, I was amazed at the vitrol of the arguments against a mask mandate. I was amazed at their lack of understanding of science, and willing to dismiss it out of hand, except the scraps which appeared to support their point of view. I was similarly dismayed with the lack of respect for the rules of the meeting they showed, and the lack of respect for opposing points of view. Neither should be part of a public discourse. It makes me wonder if they will even be satisfied if they get exactly what they want. Lest my last paragraph sound unfounded and simply inflammatory, let me recount something I saw, and forwarded on to the city. A Subaru Outback passed my wife and I at BMC West with a sign in the window saying, “Wearing a mask to stop COVID is like wearing underwear to stop a fart.” A little crude to my taste, perhaps funny, if totally uniformed. This apparent joke was actually quite disturbing when paired with what looked to me like a home-made license plate with a twitter account as the number “RT2TRVL.” The header said something like “Private Vehicle” - it is hard to read in my photograph - and the footer says “NOT COMMERCIAL.” That is, they appeared to scoff at the law requiring vehicles to be licensed and registered as well. That is, opposing masks in this case appeared to be not about personal freedom, but about rejecting the rule of law. In the interim since the last meeting I attended, the science is falling fairly solidly behind the predictions and preliminary findings about wearing masks, social distancing, and policies which can protect the vulnerable in our community. It behooves us to listen! Sincerely, J. Ryan Nielson P.S. I had a dickens of a time finding any email addresses on the city webpage. You may want to make that easily available. One might come to the conclusion that you don’t want to listen to the citizens of the city.
