My name is Kaatia Larsen and my family and I just moved to Rexburg from central California a couple of weeks ago. We came to this area of Idaho specifically because we learned of how valued freedoms are here, how great the schools would be for our kids, and how wonderfully the people treat each other. We also heard how responsible, logical, and intelligent the local leaders are — and how so many of the freedoms we hold dear as Americans are still respected and upheld here. It is because of these reasons, among many other positive factors, that even in the midst of the pandemic and while our whole state was raging with wild fires, we chose to invest thousands into fixing up our home, selling it quickly, and relocating to Rexburg. We wanted to provide a better life for our children, contribute to the amazing community here, be closer to family, and give our kids the chance to go back to school, be involved in sports, take part in extra curricular activities, and LIVE. In California, we had been experiencing a constantly increasing state of repression since March. Freedoms were being taken away almost daily. Our children, along with thousands of others, suffered greatly when the schools suddenly closed and attempted to do everything online. The situation was horrible, especially where we lived, with many low-income families whose children ended up at home with no parents to take care of them because they were out working, and who have now fallen through the cracks in mass numbers because they can’t navigate online education or don’t have the resources to do so. Domestic violence rates went way up because tensions were so high, the sales of alcohol and drugs sky-rocketed, and children and teen suicide rates increased greatly with no end of the lockdown in sight (they are projecting that the lockdown and strict regulations may likely stay in place until and maybe beyond the year 2022). Personally, we had important and necessary medical procedures for several members of our family that were postponed and/or cancelled because the hospitals and clinics would not accept any patients that weren’t seriously ill with COVID. One of our teenagers dropped into a deep depression. Our adult child lost his job and STILL hasn’t been able to get a new one, although he’s tried every day to submit applications and get interviews. Homelessness has increased there, poor families don’t have a way to feed their children as well as they did before since there’s no in-person school and now no school meals, and a plethora of businesses have gone bankrupt. People have been fleeing California in the millions, and other states who have decided to ‘handle’ the pandemic the same way California has (such as Washington, Oregon, etc.) have also seen a massive wave of their population leaving. And it ALL began with masks. I am writing you today to beg you not to let this mask mandate pass. The slope of freedoms being taken away one by one is a slippery one, and once you start to go down it, it’s very hard to reverse. Please don’t let what happened in California happen here. We have only been in the Rexburg area for a couple of weeks, but in our experience, we have already seen the vast majority of people out in public wearing masks anyway, because it has been suggested, or recommended, or because certain businesses/establishment require it of their patrons. Why mandate it? This virus has been proven to not be as deadly or as contagious as it was first believed to be anyway. In California, hospitals had to fire dozens of their staff because they didn’t have the sick people they thought they would, and they had already gone about cancelling or postponing all elective surgeries and appointments; some hospitals and clinics even shut down completely. Idaho is a smart state. We know that people here are proud to be from here and that it is held as a treasure — and we feel honored and privileged to be able to now live here. Our kids are thriving again, we are all so much happier, and life has purpose and hope once more. Please, please don’t force your people to wear masks. By all means, you can keep recommending it, but PLEASE don’t require it. Once California started requiring it, many began getting fined, those who resisted got arrested, and friends and neighbors started calling the police on each other. Protests and violence came, more crime came, and unhappiness, anxiety, and a sense of loss for any kind of hopeful future was rampant everywhere. I cannot fathom that happening here, in your beautiful city. I hope and pray that you and your team will do the right thing for your people, that you will listen to the experiences of those who have seen what can happen when too much unnecessary control is taken advantage of, and that you will especially think of the children.
