Upon advice of our attorney, we are writing to ask that you seek a balance between the health of our economy and the health of the public. Actions related to COVID-19 should be prudent and responsible regarding both. Responsible and prudent precautions at my salon include only accepting clients who have not recently traveled to a hotspot, been exposed to, or diagnosed with the virus. Clients are also required to wear a mask. Employees abide by these same policies. Multiple clients have to be turned away or rescheduled each week. This was upsetting for many of them and some will not come back until masks are no longer required. Despite the continued loss of revenue and unpopularity of these policies, they have been in place to protect our clients and employees since we were allowed to reopen in May. We also clean and disinfect each station between every client with a hospital grade disinfectant. All materials such as towels and capes are only used on one client before being laundered. Frequently touched surfaces are cleaned and disinfected frequently throughout each business day. Plexiglass dividers were added to our front desk payment area and our nail stations. We also ensure each client and professional are at least six feet apart from others, which means we have operated at only partial capacity for the past six months. Due to safety precautions, some services such as nose and bikini waxing are still not offered. We have worked very hard to responsibly protect our clients and employees while still providing a great salon and spa experience. Now it’s your turn to responsibly protect our economy. After the shutdown in March, salons were required to remain closed for two months. This was financially devastating for many small businesses, including mine. Our financial reserve is gone and business is still slower than usual which means goals of financial recovery have been replaced with goals of remaining afloat. We are proud to provide jobs for 15 amazing employees. Another shutdown would bring despair to those families (again) plus many more and ravage our local economy. Please do not allow fear to motivate your decision on Ordinance No 1243. We need to be responsible as we face the COVID challenge in our community, not fearful.
