MTI inspector arrived on site to visually assess exposed subgrade in the AM and PM.
Slab-On-Grade - vegetation had been removed from surface exposing sandy lean clay fill. Through probing, subgrade
was found to be firm and unyielding, but an additional foot of over-excavation is reqcommended by the geotechnical
engineering report.
External Footings - fill and native soils had been removed exposing sandy lean clay. Through probing, subgrade was
found to be firm and unyielding with the exception of 35 linear feet at the northeast corner (marked with paint).
Recommendation: over-excavate 12 inches, place woven geotextile fabric (Mirafi-600X or equivalent) and structural fill
-OR- over-excavate 20 inches and replace with structural fill without fabric.
Structural fill should be placed per the project plans and specifications. In addition, MTI recommends placing additional
concrete reinforcing steel in the footings at the transition between native subgrade and structural fill to minimize
differential settlement.
