2015 IBC Firewall Code Analysis
MEMO:
Evaluation is based on S1 occupancy. Building labeling below corresponds to buildings on the civil site
plan as A through D moving north to south.
Building A. 62-12’ by 40’ units = 29,760 sq. ft. The building is open on three sides
From IBC Section 506.3.3, W=30 F=820 P=1560
I=(820/1560-0.25)(30/30) I=0.276 or the area increase due to frontage.
From IBC Table 506.2, S1 allowable area = 9000 sq. ft. 9000*1.276= 11,484 sq. ft. allowable.
Two firewalls located to provide three areas that do not exceed 11,484 sq. ft. each are required.
Building B. 60-10’ by 30’ units = 18,000 sq. ft. The building is open on four sides
From IBC Section 506.3.3, W=30 F&P are the same so they equal 1 when divided.
I=(1-0.25)(30/30) I=0.75 or the area increase due to frontage.
From IBC Table 506.2, S1 allowable area = 9000 sq. ft. 9000*1.75= 15,7850 sq. ft. allowable.
Section 903.2.9 allows a maximum of 12,000 sq. ft. in each area without a sprinkler system.
One firewall situated close to the center of the building is required.
Building C. 50-12’ by 40’ units = 24,000 sq. ft. The building is open on four sides
From IBC Section 506.3.3, W=30 F&P are the same so they equal 1 when divided.

From IBC Table 506.2, S1 allowable area = 9000 sq. ft. 9000*1.75= 15,7850 sq. ft. allowable.

I=(668/1256-0.25)(30/30) I=0.282 or the area increase due to frontage.
From IBC Table 506.2, S1 allowable area = 9000 sq. ft. 9000*1.282= 11,538 sq. ft. allowable.
One firewall situated at the center of the building is required if one unit is removed. Otherwise,
two firewalls are required.
