Please see the items listed here: must install a label on the load center (electrical panel) that states “Solar only, no loads to be added”, the calculation on the submitted plans is accurate in stating the allowable backfeed is 70A including the 125% of the continuous load therefore the conductors to the line side tap must be rated for 70A-this is the reason for the #4 AWG THHN/THWN in a conduit noted on the plans and according to the 2017 NEC in article 310.15(B)(16) and 334.80 the NM-B (Romex) must be large enough to carry this load (#6 AWG NM-B is only rated at 55A), there also must be a main disconnect that is fused at 70A between the line side tap (meter) and the load center-as per plans-this is for overcurrent protection of the conductors from the line side tap to the load center. The plans called for a surface mounted install with raceways but because the plans were generic and done with a standard template but because our meter is flush mounted it made surface mounting impractical. Because of this we ran the wires through the walls rather than surface mounting them. Additionally the plans called for 4 gauge wire going from the shutoff to the meter but the maximum size that my taps allowed was 6 gauge. The maximum amps that will pass through the entire system in optimal conditions is 50 amps. 6 gauge wire is good up to 65 amps. So this should be sufficient for the system. Any larger gauge wire would require a special order tap.
