I just found out that there is a meeting tonight to discuss mandatory masks. I would respectfully like to voice my opinion. I am grateful to the City of Rexburg and for the one news report I read that said Idaho is tying the 'zones' with actual data (hospitalizations at high rates = moving into a more conservative 'zone'). I know that the job of our city and state is complicated and difficult and I appreciate those who are willing to hear and study out all sides. I would like to urge the City of Rexburg to please be cautious with our taking freedoms for any reason. Once given away, they are so much harder to get back, as is evidenced by all the constitutional freedoms we have slowly given away in bits and pieces and have not gotten back. Of course I am not opposed to anyone wearing masks who feels that is best for their health. It is debatable whether ... 3) AND there is proof that herd immunity is not better in the long-run for our world--what happens with the next virus? We can't expect our bodies to get stronger unless we have had some exposure to what it needs to learn to fight. I am not saying that those at risk shouldn't exercise caution--they should, but we can't live in a sterile bubble and expect that we will overcome this (new vaccines that haven't been fully tested don't seem safer and because there are a lot of people who are feeling that way now, why wouldn't they make that mandatory next? Where will it stop?). However, I am vehemently opposed to making it mandatory regardless (especially since it is not an actual law!). For some in authority, the issue really is about keeping us all safe, if that was the case for everyone, I would have much less of an issue with wearing a mask, but right now that's only a small part of what is going on. From what I read and see, it's as much about power as anything else. First it will be control about things that seem to 'make sense', but I just don't think it's going to stop there. History shows that when power is given, they don't give it back, they take more. Please don't be the ones to give more power to those that seek to take it, one piece at a time.
