Customer Services; Deborah Lovejoy Inbox In support of wearing masks Dear Rexburg City Council & Mayor Merrill, I am writing to respectfully support the wearing of masks in Rexburg as I understand there is a meeting tonight or soon to discuss this. We are called "America's Family Community". We have the reputation of being a place where people love, respect, watch out for, and serve our neighbors. Wearing a mask is something we do for other people. Wearing a mask does not protect the person wearing it much but research has shown that it dramatically cuts down on the spread of COVID 19 to wear a mask. I know it's not comfortable for some to wear one, but this is perhaps one of the best ways we can love and serve our neighbors and preserve our community right now. Wearing a mask could also help our town maintain as much normalcy as possibly by reducing and preventing the spread of the virus. As you are aware, cases are spiking in Idaho, particularly since Memorial Day and after the Fourth of July. It would not take very many serious cases to overwhelm our healthcare system here. In my opinion, we do not have a big enough health care system here to feel like we can go ahead as we have been doing without putting our city and our people in serious jeopardy. We are in the middle of a worldwide pandemic of epic proportions with no cure yet. While this virus has had the reputation of largely affecting older adults and those with underlying health conditions no one young or old really knows how they will respond to this virus. Let's love and serve our older adults--those who were foundational in building our town and giving us what we have today. Let's protect our healthcare, workers who are putting their lives on the line everyday. COVID-19 is affecting more and more younger adults and youth. Let's protect each other and our youth who are our future. The main argument I hear about not wearing a mask is that being required to wear a mask infringes on a person's rights. I think we are all ready to return to normalcy. I am all for preserving constitutional rights. There are several examples of laws that protect our constitutional rights while putting restrictions on how those rights are used. Idaho just passed a law prohibiting the use of cell phones while driving to save lives. It's my right to own a cell phone and, some would argue to use it while driving, but using it while driving comes with serious risks to others individuals' lives. It's a constitutional right to own a firearm, but an individual can't go down to the city park or any other public place, set up a target and start shooting or just discharge it anywhere they please. Perhaps the most compelling example to me is the law not to drive drunk. It is an individual's right to drink but it is not a right to get into a car and drive drunk thereby endangering the lives of others and themselves. It appears to me that we have rights that are protected by our constitutions and laws. Restrictions are placed when my exercising my rights infringes on the rights of others. Laws have to be made to protect others. I feel wearing a mask is similar. Mayor Merrill strongly urged Rexburg citizens to wear masks to the parade without making it a city ordinance at that time. From pictures of the event, it appears few followed that request. He tried being less restrictive like not imposing a fine and appealing to peoples' good will. That hasn't worked so far, so I support the council making it a city ordinance. I feel this will help our community save lives, reduce the drain on resources, and help our economy by actually being able to keep businesses open. If we overwhelm our healthcare system here and have to shutdown, that will impact our economy more negatively than wearing a mask. Wearing a mask now may make it safer for our children returning to school and our community this fall by reducing the number of Covid cases. So similar to a gun law, it is my right to not wear a mask in my own home, but when I go out, or invite others over, let's wear a mask. We could follow the example of Driggs and Victor by requiring masks in public. When Mayor Johnson issued the mask order before the fourth of July holiday he said: "The city cites the “sudden and dramatic increase in COVID-19” in eastern Idaho and nationally, combined with the high volume of travel Teton County as the reason for the order. The order is in effect for all retail businesses, restaurants and bars, gyms, schools, parks, churches, and any other location where people will tend to gather. The order requires businesses to post a notice prominently at all entrances and requires all hotel and short-term lodging operators to notify incoming guests of this mandate, according to the release. 'At this time in our history, not wearing a mask is similar to drunken driving. An individual may assert their right to endanger our general population and economy, but there are consequences to such irresponsible behavior,” Johnson said. “If we are to avoid another shutdown or stay-home order, we must take reasonable measures to control this public health emergency. Pro-mask is pro-business!’ “ https://www.eastidahonews.com/2020/07/driggs-issues-emergency-order-requiring-face-masks/ Could we please require masks in public? Masks cut down seriously in the transmission and protect best those around us—not the person wearing the mask. This is an opportunity for us to do something for other people. For the reasons mentioned above, it is imperative that everyone wears masks—not just those who don’t want to get infected.
