HomeMy WebLinkAboutRe: City Council Meeting Message July 15, 2020Please vote NO to mandatory mask wearing in Rexburg. Masks are ineffective at preventing and protecting people from the virus. The virus is microscopic and passes right through the mask fibers. My aunt got covid despite wearing gloves & a mask everywhere. They have also shown in research mask wearing does more harm then good. COVID-19 is caused by a virus, not a bacterium. A virus is on average about 100x smaller than a bacterium. An airborne virus is going to easily travel through the pores of your cloth mask, which are substantially larger. Viruses are measured on a nanometer scale. Pores in fabrics are measured on a micrometer scale. What’s the difference? 1 micrometer = 1000 nanometers. COVID-19 diameter size = 100 nanometers = 0.1 micrometer. Typical pore size diameter of various woven cloth fabrics = 10-45 micrometers. 10 micrometers = 10,000 nanometers. 🦠 COVID-19: 100 nanometers 😷 vs your mask: 10,000 nanometers For some perspective: 100 COVID-19 viral particles can fit end to end along the diameter of just one fabric pore in your cloth mask. On average, 7,850 COVID-19 viral particles can fit through EACH PORE of your mask. (Using Area = pi r squared) *Edited to add: Cloth masks prevent large droplets from carrying pathogens away from your own face. Unfortunately, small, aerosolized droplets which viral particles will be attached to, are still much, much smaller than the pore size of any woven mask. And when a person sneezes, while large droplets do exit their mouth, most of the droplets that are generated in a sneeze are aerosolized and can pass easily through a cloth mask. A helpful quote from an extensive write-up: “Disease transmission through these large droplets is what we often refer to as “droplet/contact spread”, where disease transmission occurs because you touch a surface contaminated by these droplets, or get caught within the spray zone when the patient is coughing. Aerosols are so small that buoyant forces overcome gravity, allowing them to say suspended in the air for long periods, or they evaporate before they hit the floor, leaving the solid particulate (“droplet nuclei”) free to float very long distances, causing what we often refer to as “airborne” transmission.” https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15764538/ https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6832307/ 🦠🦠🦠🦠🦠 Also... The Petri dishes growing bacteria in the image below are filled with nutrients specifically designed to help bacteria grow and were incubated in an warm environment for several hours (or 1-2 days). This is an ideal environment for bacteria to thrive. A virus cannot grow on a Petri dish. Viruses require a living host to survive. The distance at which they sneezed and coughed onto these plates (as you can see in the image) is much closer than any normal human being would stand when interacting with another person, let alone while they are coughing or sneezing, or talking and singing for that matter. This is precisely why you cover your mouth with your arm/elbow when you cough or sneeze. This isn’t news! To prevent droplet transmission, turn away from others, use your elbow, and go on breathing fresh air. What we are doing by wearing a mask is trapping all of that bacteria and incubating it as you go, because the air temperature around your nose and mouth rises significantly due to wearing the mask and trapping your own body heat. “Although the fate of these droplets largely depends on environmental factors such as humidity, temperature, etc., in general, the larger droplets settle due to gravity and do not travel distances more than 1–2 m. However, aerosols remain suspended in the air for longer durations due to their small size and play a key role in spreading infection.” “nanometer-sized particles... can easily slip between the openings in the network of filter fibers...” https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsnano.0c03252 Please vote NO on mandatory mask law in Rexburg. I talked with my childrens dr who specializes with kids with SPD, Autism, PANDA, PANS, and she said making mask mandatory is harmful & dangerous to them mentally, emotionally, and physically. I have 2 boys with SPD and wearing masks will effect them greatly. Mask wearing can cause low oxygen (hypoxia) which suppresses the immune system. It also causes rapid breathing, fatigue, dizziness, emotional upset, increased heart rate. Also masks make breathing more difficult for those with COPD, asthma (1/13 people have asthma). From one study on mask. "High breathing resistance made it difficult for the subject to breathe and take in sufficient oxygen. Shortage of oxygen stimulates the sympathetic nervous system and increases heart rate (Ganong 1997 <https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7087880/#CR2> ). It was probable that the subjects felt unfit, fatigued and overall discomfort due to this reason. White et al. (1991 <https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7087880/#CR9> ) found that the increases in heart rate, skin temperature and subjective ratings may pose substantial additional stress to the wearer and might reduce work tolerance. This could be the reason why Farquharson reported that working 12-h shifts while wearing an N95 mask had indeed been a challenge to their ED" Thank you Savannah
