HomeMy WebLinkAboutSupport of City Council vote on mask mandateDear Rexburg City Council, As a member of the community for over 3 years, I love Rexburg and all those who live here. This town is one of the kindest and most welcoming that I have lived in. Which is the reason why I very strongly support the position on a mask mandate. There are many people in this community who are at higher risk of contracting the virus and it severely affecting them such as pregnant women and the elderly. Even if the virus does not prove lethal to these communities, it may affect their quality of life after they recover as COVID-19 has shown to result in kidney failure, heart disease, and decreased lung capacity. As Rexburg has a high population of college students as well as tourists traveling through frequently, I am concerned about the possible outbreak potential that may occur as BYU-Idaho partially reopens in the fall. As fall semester is the largest for BYU-Idaho, even though there may be less overall students returning do to some remote and online courses, there will still be a high number moving back. There is no doubt that students will move back for reasons such as being close to friends, family, or for employment opportunities. Also, as BYU-Idaho’s out of state students are predominately from areas that have some of the highest cases such as California, Utah, Arizona, and Washington, I feel it would be irresponsible to not recognize the risk these students returning poses. I believe a mask mandate is a way to prevent the spread from those returning from what are becoming virus epicenters. Lastly, I believe that wearing masks not only helps protect others from contracting the virus but also it shows love and respect for fellow community members which is one of the things that makes Rexburg so great. For all of these reasons and more, I strongly support the mask mandate. Thank you for your service, Kaylee Sandys 714-883-7670
