HomeMy WebLinkAboutMandatory Face Mask Law ($100 fine)Hello, I saw a Facebook post regarding Rexburg city council voting on a mandatory facial mask law in Rexburg with a fine of $100? Is this for real? I'm genuinely curious. What is making masks mandatory going to do HONESTLY other than make a lot of people upset because they are being forced to do something. When I go to Walmart and see people in masks literally all they do is mess with it which only makes the spread of this "virus" worse. Do you genuinely think a child is going to be able to leave something on their face like that alone? If I'm asked politely to wear a mask in a specific business to shop I will, but half the time the people aren't even wearing the mask right so what's the point? Making this mandatory face mask law seems ridiculous to me. I'm already a poor college student, I'm not paying $100 if I forget my face mask. Especially when that money would have otherwise gone towards groceries to make sure I even have food on my table. The W.H.O. has literally stated the following, "Masks should only be used by healthcare workers, caretakers or by people who are sick with symptoms like fever and cough." People with those symptoms should be wearing masks. I'm not trying to be dramatic, but I have a very difficult time breathing in those masks which causes me to use my hands anyway to adjust and manipulate it so I can get fresh air. I just thought I would voice my opinion, I'm not even sure anyone will actually read this and take it into account. I just know that as soon as you make something mandatory especially with a fine, it's taking away the peoples agency and freedom to choose for themselves. How many cases are in Rexburg taking up space in the hospital? If it's the students coming back to the BYU-I campus you're worried about, take it up with the school. Encourage students from out of state to stay home. I just looked up the statistics in Madison County, and a total of only 87 people have been confirmed having COVID-19, with 0 deaths? Maybe we should continue to focus more on maintaining social distancing efforts, providing hand sanitizer at various locations, and encouraging individuals to wear masks if they are experiencing symptoms or if they feel inclined to FOR THEMSELVES. Maybe we should focus on helping those that have lost their jobs and are forced to return to any type of work in order to provide for their families. If you've read this far, thanks for your time. Again, I am not against people wearing masks, but I am not for enforcing a $100 fine for not wearing one. That may sound like no big deal to people with money, but for those of us in school and trying to make ends meet, that could influence whether or not we eat that week or can pay rent. Simply because we forget a facial mask. Thank you again. A concerned resident and her husband.
