HomeMy WebLinkAboutMandatory Face MaskTo whom it may concern,
I am a Rexburg resident and would like to share my thoughts on mandating face masks.
I feel it would be a mistake to impose a fine and disorderly conduct misdemeanor for not wearing a face mask. I think wearing face masks are a good idea in areas where social distancing
is not possible, such as retail stores, restaurants, and movie theaters, but should not be punishable by a $100 fine and/or misdemeanor.
I think posting more signs at stores and throughout the community requesting citizens wear face masks would be more appropriate and not infringe on citizens' rights. I realize fines
are imposed when citizens do not wear seatbelts, for example. However, seatbelts are proven to save lives, face masks on the other hand, are only shown to be 25-50% effective at keeping
infected persons from spreading germs. They have not been proven to keep people from getting sick. For something that has some benefits, but is not proven to protect both parties, I
think implementing a fine and penalty are grave mistakes and would cause more harm than good.
In addition, our country is very divided right now for many reasons. Shaming people, fining people, and punishing them for not wearing a face mask will result in more hate and division.
Rexburg is a loving, friendly, Christ centered community, I think posting signs and raising public awareness that masks should be worn when social distancing is not possible will have
a more positive impact than a mandate. I feel most citizens will comply with requests based on science and compassion. Those who do not comply probably won't comply if there's a mandate
that includes a fine and penalty either.
Thank you for hearing our concerns,
