HomeMy WebLinkAboutMasks (7)I spend about 40% of my time in the Rexburg area (St. Anthony) and 60% of my time in Salt Lake City. Please mandate masks before we see a huge outbreak in Rexburg area. Rexburg area is a tight-knit community and do you think even one preventable COVID death is acceptable? I don't. Behind the numbers are actual people. Salt Lake has been out of control with the number of infected people and deaths from COVID, and I think at the highest we had around 800 test positive in one day, with that week having about 600-800 each day. This last week (a few weeks after mandating masks in Salt Lake county), we have seen numbers decreasing into the 400s. It's the masks. Educate people and mandate them. Reassure them that you're only requiring them in public places in order to protect everyone and to decrease the spread. Do education on how masks work...they don't prevent people from getting COVID, but having an infected and non-infected person both wear a mask significantly decreases the risk of spread to the non infected person from about 70% chance they'll get infected to about 5%. Nobody is asking people to wear masks 24/7, and no they don't cause oxygen deprivation (otherwise surgeons would be on oxygen for a 6 hr+ surgery). People can do this because they are good citizens and care about each other. We wear masks to keep each other safe. Please do the right thing and set a good example for all of Idaho so that you don't end up like all of the places right now that are hotspots. Requiring masks is no different than no smoking in public. Remind people that asymptomatic spread is the reason it's so important to wear masks...and remind people who they wear masks for...being the at risk are important people. You should get at risk people in the community in a video saying thank you for wearing a mask for me, and me, and me. Seeing people you love affected by this should not be needed to make a change that will PREVENT the spread to some people. With the flu the vulnerable can protect themselves by getting a vaccine, but that isn't possible with COVID...everyone around us is our vaccine when they wear masks and physical distance. Please do the right thing here and mandate masks and a fine. So far people haven't been compelled to do the right thing until it hits them in the pocketbook. Explain this is a fine just like not wearing your seatbelts. People can choose, but please choose our community. Natasha Flamm
