Auto Zone is going to remodel the Honk’s building on North 2nd East.
The Committee members reviewed some photographs of the building and proposed elevations. As part
of the remodel of the building and conversion to an auto parts store, Auto Zone would like to remove all
awnings and all windows on the building’s north side (front entrance), remove awnings from the west
side of the building (2nd East street frontage), and remove all windows and all awnings from the south
side of the building (Loraine Ave street frontage). This proposed exterior remodel, they determined,
deviates further away from the City’s Design Standards rather than bringing the existing non-conforming
building closer to conformance.
It was decided that if the windows and awnings were left as they exist, (or in other words, the exterior is
left as is, structurally) and the color change as proposed, is included, except no exterior red doors,, then
there would be no further issues for the Design Review Committee. However, if the applicant wishes to
pursue their current proposal, then the Committee determined that there would need to be a lot more
input from the applicant as to how each of the design standards are met, including rooflines, entryways,
wall projections/recesses, etc. Another meeting with the Committee would be required. Gary Leikness
will communicate this information to the applicant.
