Quonset Building 09 00211/09 00212
July 15, 2009

Staff: Gary Leikness, Elaine McFerrin
Madison County is moving a 50’ x 100’ Quonset building from its current location to county -owned land on
Airport Road. The building will be used for storage. The property is zoned Light Industrial. At issue is
whether the existing landscaping and berm are sufficient to buffer the view of the building from Hwy. 20.The
County currently is taking care of the property - with sprinklers, mowing, etc.. The berm runs the entire 400
feet of Hwy. frontage. It is 36 feet wide and 18 feet high.
Les Fadness said the old buildings on the site may eventually be rebuilt and asked if maintaining the existing
landscaping and adding to the berm along the west side of the property would be sufficient at this time.
The Committee discussed the issue and felt that adding trees to screen and break up the visual line of the
building would help make the property more attractive when viewed from Hwy. 20. The aim is to at least
screen the unattractive industrial buildings.
It was decided that trees would be added – no exact number was stated at this time. At the southwest corner
of the property, there would be 40 to 50 feet of additional buffering around the curve, with trees for
screening
Gary Leikness will visit the site to check on the existing landscaping and the probable number of trees (and
their size) that will be necessary to add for proper buffering. He will email his findings to the Design Review
Committee.
A building permit could be issued when a letter from Madison County is received by the City’s Building
Safety Coordinator that states the County’s commitment to moving toward the Design Review Committee’s
decision.
