Copies of Sign Ordinance #1027 and the Commercial Lighting standards were provided to those in attendance. The issue brought before the Design Review Committee today was the use of LED lighting for the signage on the Fat Cats Fun building. There was a concern that LED lighting looks similar to neon lighting. Retha Cain brought samples of LED lighting for the Committee members to see. She also brought pictures showing where the signage will be on the building. The building is located way back from North 2nd East. Ms. Cain said LED lighting is not the same as neon lighting. LED lighting is not tacky; it is beautiful, with defined lines, and it is easy to read. It is energy efficient. Elaine McFerrin said that Mayor Woodland had viewed the LED lighting samples earlier in the day; he felt that the City Council would be okay with this type of lighting. The Committee members discussed the issue. Dan Hanna said he could not see a reason to deny this type of signage lighting. Thaine Robinson agreed, although he was concerned about setting a precedent. The Design Review Committee members gave their approval for the use of LED lighted signage on the Fat Cats Fun building. In addition, they stated that this LED lighting must not blink or flash; a gradual change in color would be fine.
