producing objectionable fumes.
Run-off Plates and Backing
Extension plates, run-off tabs and backings shall be made of the same material as the base metals listed in this
specification (except for copper backing bars) shall be used where indicated on the attached Weld Data Sheets.
When instructed by the engineer drawings, the backing bars shall be removed.
Preheat
Prior to tacking or welding the base metal shall be preheated and the heat maintained during welding in
accordance with Table 1.
When the base metal temperature is below 32 degrees F the base metal shall be preheated to a minimum of
70 degrees F and the minimum interpass temp shall be maintained during welding.
Preheating may be accomplished by means of flame torches or by electrical or induction heaters.
Preheat shall consist of heating a band of the base metal equal to the thickness of the base metal but not
less that 3 inches on either side of the joint and in advance of the welding to the desired temperature and
maintaining this temperature during welding.

Cleaning of Completed Welds
Slag shall be removed from all completed welds. The weld and adjacent base metal shall be cleaned by brushing
or other suitable means. Tightly adherent spatter remaining after the cleaning operation is acceptable unless its
removal is required for the purpose of Nondestructive Testing (NDT).
In Process Cleaning
Before welding over previously deposited metal, all slag shall be removed and the weld and adjacent base metal
shall be brushed clean. This requirement shall apply not only to successive layers but also to successive beads
and to the crater area when welding is resumed after any interruption. It shall not, howeve r, restrict the welding of
plug and slot welds.
Defects
Cracks and porosity appearing on the surface of any weld bead shall be removed by gouging or grinding and
rewelded prior to depositing the next layer of weld material.
Peening
Peening shall only be used when approved by the Welding or Design Engineer. Peening may only be used to
relieve stresses or control distortions and may only be used on intermediate layers. No peening shall be done on
the root surface layers.
Treatment of Underside of Groove
When back-gouging is required on the underside of a full penetration weld joint the root of the joint shall be ground
or air carbon arc gouged to produce a groove contour substantially conforming to a pre -qualified single U-joint and
it’s depth shall be to sound metal to ensure complete penetration into the previously deposited weld metal.

Preparation
Edges and surfaces of parts to be welded may be prepared by shearing, flame cutting, plasma -arc cutting,
machining or air carbon arc gouging. These edges and surfaces shall be smooth, uniform, and free of fins, tears,
cracks and other defects that would adversely affect the quality or strength of the finished weld. Surfaces to be
welded shall be free, within two inches of any weld location, from loose or thick scale, (exc ept for tightly adhering
small islands), slag, rust, paint, grease, moisture, and other foreign material that would prevent proper welding or
producing objectionable fumes.
Run-off Plates and Backing
Extension plates, run-off tabs and backings shall be made of the same material as the base metals listed in this
specification (except for copper backing bars and ASTM A653 Grade 50 Steel.) and shall be used where indicated
on the attached Weld Data Sheets. When instructed by the engineer drawings, the backi ng bars shall be removed.
Preheat
Prior to tacking or welding the base metal shall be preheated and the heat maintained during welding in
accordance with Table 1.
When the base metal temperature is below 32 degrees F the base metal shall be preheated to a minimum of
70 degrees F and the minimum interpass temp shall be maintained during welding
Preheating may be accomplished by means of flame torches or by electrical or induction heaters.
Preheat shall consist of heating a band of the base metal equal to the thickness of the base metal but not
less that 3 inches on either side of the joint and in advance of the welding to the desired temperature and
maintaining this temperature during welding.

Approved by:
Rick Pfeiffer
Electrical Characteristics
The current used for welding shall be Direct Curr ent, Electrode Positive, (DCEP) as noted on the Welding
Procedure Specifications
Workmanship
All welding and related operations shall be performed in accordance with good shop practice and within the
recommendations and limitations outlined in AWS D1.1 and D1.3 specifications / CSA W59.
Cleaning of Completed Welds
Slag shall be removed from all completed welds, and the weld and adjacent base metal shall be cleaned by
brushing or other suitable means. Tightly adherent spatter remaining after the cleani ng operation is acceptable
unless its removal is required for the purpose of Nondestructive Testing (NDT).
In Process Cleaning
Before welding over previously deposited metal, all slag shall be removed and the weld and adjacent base metal
shall be brushed clean. This requirement shall apply not only to successive layers but also to successive beads
and to the crater area when welding is resumed after any interruption. It shall not, however, restrict the welding of
plug and slot welds.

Surfaces to be
welded shall be free, within two inches of any weld location, from loose or thick scale, (except for tightly adhering
small islands), slag, rust, paint, grease, moisture, and other foreign material that would prevent proper welding or
producing objectionable fumes.
When instructed by the engineer dra wings, the backing bars shall be removed.

Welding Specification
Gas Metal Arc Welding
Volume: BW -100
Date: 2/4/05
Approved by:
Rick Pfeiffer
AWS 5.12.1 Gas Metal Arc Welding with gas shielding shall be done in draft or wind condition of less than 5 mph. If
ambient draft or wind conditions exceed 5 mph a shelter or barrier may be used to protect the arc. The shelter or
barrier shall be of a material and shape appropriate to reduce the wind velocity in the vicinity of the weld to a
maximum of 5 mph.
Electrical Characteristics
The current used for welding shall be Direct Current, Electrode Positive, (DCEP) as noted on the Welding
Procedure Specifications.
Workmanship
All welding and related operations shall be performed in accordance with good shop practice and within the
recommendations and limitations outlined in AWS D1.1, D1.3, and W59 specifications.
Cleaning of Completed Welds
Slag shall be removed from all completed welds, and the weld and adjacent base metal shall be cleaned by
brushing or other suitable means. Tightly adherent spatter remaining after the cleaning operation is acceptable
unless its removal is required for the purpose of Nondestructive Testing (NDT).
Defects
Cracks and porosity appearing on the surface of any weld bead shall be removed by gouging or grinding and
rewelded prior to depositing the next la yer of weld material.
Peening
Peening shall only be used when approved by the Welding or Design Engineer. Peening may only be used to
relieve stresses or control distortions and may only be used on intermediate layers. No peening shall be done on
the root surface layers.
Treatment of Underside of Groove
When back-gouging is required on the underside of a full penetration weld joint the root of the joint shall be ground
or air carbon arc gouged to produce a groove contour substantially conforming to a pre-qualified single U-joint and
it’s depth shall be to sound metal to ensure complete penetration into the previously deposited weld metal.
Welding Procedure Specification
The attached Welding Procedure Specifications forms are a part of this specification.
