Smoke Alarms
2012 IRC Code Section 106. R314
All smoke alarms shall be listed in accordance with UL 217 & installed
in
accordance with NFPA 72
-One in each sleeping area
-Outside of each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the
bedrooms
-On each additional story including un-finish & finished basements and
habitable attics but not including crawl spaces and uninhabitable attics.
In dwellings or dwelling units with splits levels and without an
intervening door between the adjacent levels a smoke alarm installed on
the upper level shall suffice for the adjacent lower level provided that the
lower level is less than one full story below the upper level.
-Alarm devices shall be interconnected with battery backup that the
actuation of one alarm will activate all of the alarms

with either 8d nails spaced at 6" o/c at panel edges and 12"
o/c at intermediate studs or 16 gage staples at 4" and 12"
o/c respectfully. Block horizontal panel joints with minimum
2x4 flat blocking.
Provide minimum (2)5/8" or (3)1/2" diameter anchor bolts
per wall segment with 3x3x1/4 plate washers and 2x
pressure treated sill plate.
Provide 7/16" OSB on exterior side of wall. Fasten
with either 8d nails spaced at 6" o/c at panel edges
and 12" o/c at intermediate studs or 16 gage staples
at 6" and 12" o/c respectfully. Block horizontal panel
joints with minimum 2x4 flat blocking.
