I do love the fall with football, cross country, volleyball and soccer seasons upon us. That gives us all many opportuni- ties to get out and support our local students as they play the sports, march in the band, cheer on the teams and dance for halftime entertainment. Don’t miss this opportunity to get involved in the community! I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our Rexburg city team members for their great efforts to keep our city running smoothly this summer. There are so many things to do in our short summer window that it is a real challenge to get it all done but there is no lack of effort on their part. As I see our people around town doing their jobs, I am so grateful for the good people we have that take their jobs seriously and are dedicated to doing a great job for all the citizens of Rexburg. I also want to thank all of you, the wonderful people that live here and trust us with your tax money. We know those are precious and hard earned dollars and we strive every day to put them to best use to make Rexburg a safe, efficient, beautiful and fun city to live in. We appreciate the feedback that we receive about the positive things we’ve done and earnestly strive to improve on things that need to be done better. All of us on the city of Rexburg team are very grateful for our employment here and hope to earn your trust every- day. We have recently done ribbon cuttings for two local employers that have expanded their businesses in a big way, have others that are hoping to expand and we have several other new businesses that have opened and are coming on line soon. We also have interest from other businesses in coming here and are working hard to help them find the space they want. People often ask why we haven’t been able to fill some of the empty buildings or why we don’t bring in XYZ company that they like. We are actively talking to companies that have expressed interest in available buildings but unfortunately often times their needs and wants don’t match up to what we have available or it doesn’t work out with the landlord, etc. The city’s role is in facili- tating opportunities and we can’t force anyone to take space that they don’t believe works for them wheth- er it be location, lease pricing or other considerations. I’ll close with 4 suggestions to help us in life that I learned from Brian Pyper, one of our awesome school board members in his address to the Madison High graduates last May. They are: 1. Trust….to have power and influence with people, you must earn their trust. Live your life prepared to sail with the tide when your ship comes in. 2. Praise, not criticize….honest, earned, deserved praise will get you further than criticism. People will change to earn more praise. 3. Do the hard things….they are worth doing. Why go to the moon? Why does Rice play Texas? Or why does Rigby play Madison? (haha..a little rivalry joke there!) We do hard things to achieve and prove we can do it! 4. Choose good friends….associate yourself with people who don’t gossip and stay after the party to clean up (or help put the chairs away after church!) Be with people who are not vulgar or crude. A wise man once said, “Show me your friends and I’ll tell you who you are!” Thank you all for all you do to make Rexburg a wonderful place to live and raise our families.
