The nights are cool and the mornings crisp and clear….yes, Fall is upon us and if you’re like me, you’re still
yearning for a bit of summer warmth before we go into winter. The good news is that we have a myriad of
fun things to do to occupy our days and evenings. I hope you are taking advantage of the opportunity to sup-
port your kids and your neighbor’s kids in all of the fall sports and other activities they are involved in. Nu-
merous studies have shown that youth that are involved in sports, bands, theater and other wholesome ac-
tivities tend to have fewer problems with drugs, alcohol and many of the other ills of our society.
I hope as we participate in these events that we will remember to exhibit good sportsmanship and be a great
example to all of the children who are looking to us as how we should conduct ourselves in a society where
the norms seem to be becoming less civil all the time. Let’s NOT be the norm! Let’s stand out and show posi-
tivity, respect and love for others, even if they are on the opposite side of the field!
I need to say a big THANK YOU to all of our Rexburg City Team Members for all their hard work this summer
getting all of our summer projects done. It’s been difficult at times because construction people are all so
busy that some projects have been delayed more than we would like, but they are coming together now and
most should be wound up before the winter weather sets in.
Welcome to all of the new and returning BYU Idaho students. Our “Burg’ gets much busier this time of year
and some things are less convenient with longer lines and such but I encourage you to take advantage of
being in line with someone...ask about them…it’s amazing how many times you find out that you have some-
thing in common…maybe a friend or relative from their hometown that they know. It really is a small world
and can be a very friendly world if we but take the time and care enough to ask and learn about someone
else.
I have had many students tell me that they love Rexburg because people are so friendly and the town is
clean and nice. Great job people…let’s keep it up!!
We have many events coming up in the city. I invite you to refer to the city web page (Rexburg.org) to find
out about cultural events, city league sports and many other activities that you can be involved in. One of the
most exciting things coming up for fall is the opening of our new Kidsburg!! Kidsburg is an indoor children’s
play park that is currently being built at The Zone. It will feature a miniature city with stores, banks, service
stations, cafes and many other simulated businesses that children can go in and pretend that they are doing
business, waiting on customers, shopping, etc. We are very excited to provide this new playpark for especial-
ly the young families of the area, but it will be great for grandparents to go and watch the “young -uns” play
and use their imaginations as well. The Zone will still have the indoor turf field for soccer and other sports
use as well as the basketball/volleyball courts for indoor winter sports. Watch for a coming announcement of
the Grand Opening of Kidsburg soon and please come check it out!
I participated in a “Jogathon” at Kennedy Elementary yesterday and will be doing the “Mayor’s Waling Chal-
lenge” again this year. That will be a great way to help me get back into shape from being in too many
meetings the last few months. I encourage all of you to join me in walking at least 10,000 steps a day and
trying to be a more healthy and happy Rexburg. Thank you to all of you for being great people!
Sincerely, Mayor Jerry Merrill Life is Great…..in Rexburg, Idaho!!!
