August 11th.
It's the end of June and half of 2018 is gone. Wow, how time flies when you're having fun!
July is always such an action packed month with the highlight always our Whoopee Days Rodeo,
Fireworks and Parade to celebrate our Independence Day. I am so grateful to our founding fathers
that had the "inspiration" and put in the "perspiration" to fight for our freedom and draft the mag-
nificent document, the United States Constitution, which still binds us together today and keeps our
government working to protect and serve all of US.
Speaking of Fireworks, I need to caution those of you who love to shoot off the "big ones", that is
the large aerial fireworks…these require a permit from the Fire Department before launching them
and our Police Officers will respond to complaints to any suspected non-permitted launches. I en-
courage all of us to obey the law. Last year in Pocatello, a home burned down from a neighbor's
aerial fireworks launch that was "just for fun". It turned out not so fun for all involved. We do not
want that to happen to anyone, so please get a permit and take any necessary precautions to avoid
bad happenings.
To lead into our Whoopee Days week, we will have a community family night get-together called
"Rexburg on the Green". This is an opportunity to enjoy each other's company on Center Street with
a free watermelon bust, lots of fun activities for all ages and a free concert in the evening. The
street will be covered with fresh grass so it will be like a big lawn party. For more info, check out our
Rexburg Facebook Events or my personal Facebook page. Please join us and have a great time!
City crews and volunteers are in the middle of building our re-purposed "Kiddie Park" at Park Street
Park. This much underutilized park will now be home to a very interactive playground for young
children. Thank you so much to all who have put so much time and effort into this and for all of the
sponsors who are helping us get it built. Come check it out and thank all these people personally at
the Ribbon Cutting event scheduled for Saturday, July 7th or at the Grand Opening on Wednesday,
July 12th. Please watch your local news sources for more details. This park will be a great addition
for the young families of our city.
Don't forget to get out and play some "Pickleball" at our newly repurposed courts in the South Na-
ture Park. There is almost always someone there to play a game with and it is meant to be a very
social sport where you can just join in with whoever's there, get some great exercise and make
some new friends. It’s a great sport for those of all ages, even the "old fogeys" like me!
Thank you so much for the kindnesses I experience and see here in Rexburg every day. I firmly be-
lieve that living the "Golden Rule" is the key to a safe and happy community and it starts with each
of us getting up in the morning having that attitude of serving one another with love and respect.
Best to each of you……Mayor Jerry Merrill
