All city offices will be closed on December 24th and 25th for Christmas. Happy December everyone! I hope all of you had a wonderful time with family and/or friends during the Thanks- giving holiday. I am so grateful for my family and so many friends. I count each one of you among that group and am so fortunate to be surrounded each day by such awesome people! Marianne and I attended the BYU-I Christmas concert last night featuring Brian Stokes Mitchell. Such an inspiring event! Mr. Mitchell is such a great talent and had us laughing one moment and on the verge of tears the next as he worked though his repertoire of humor and more spiritual songs. He brought down the house with his render- ing of "Mr. Grinch." Whenever I attend one of the many fine arts concerts we have here in Rexburg, I am remind- ed of the reason "the arts" are so important to our human experience. I always feel a lift to my spirit and a strong- er love and bond for everyone around me. One of the poignant moments of this concert was the presentation of the documentary of Christmas Eve in 1914. In the battle of Flanders Fields, Belgium in World War I, from the battle trenches a soldier started singing "Silent Night". Many others joined him from both sides and soon they came out of the trenches, joined together in song, declared a truce for Christmas and actually celebrated the holiday to- gether as fellow human beings instead of enemies. I whispered to Marianne, "Wouldn’t it be so strange to social- ize together that night and then be thinking, 'We will again be trying to kill each other tomorrow!' Wouldn't it have been great to have the leaders of the warring nations there that night to see how their troops came togeth- er, and be inspired to end the conflict as those men did instead of carrying it on. I pray each day for our nations' leaders to use that type of attitude and methodology in solving the world's conflicts and I hope we will use the same in our relationships with family and others. We are so lucky to have BYU Idaho here in our community, providing us with the opportunity to attend such world class productions. I encourage all of us to attend as often as possible. I know I am a better person for having been there. I had a nice visit with a BYU Idaho student a few days ago. His comment to me was, "I love Rexburg (even being from sunny Arizona). I feel so safe here and there is just a great spirit here. What is it about Rexburg that makes it feel that way?" I replied, "It's two simple things. First, the people who live here (that's ALL of YOU) do their very best to uphold the ideals of our city slogan, "America's Family Community", and we, as leaders base our decisions on "How can we keep Rexburg a great place to live and raise a family." The second reason is our City Employees. They truly have the attitude of "Serving" the community. Our police officers work everyday to build positive rela- tions with the public, being a resource to help us all do things right instead of just working to catch us doing things wrong. They are very inspiring to me in the way they work and I hope you will take any opportunity to thank them for the great work that they do in keeping Rexburg "America's Family Community". Lastly, I know many of you aren't fond of snow removal season but let's work through it positively and help each other where we can. Our streets crews almost inevitably are called on to work through the night on Christmas Eve or Christmas morn when the rest of us are cozy and enjoying the holiday with our families. I appreciate their efforts so much and I hope you will too. MERRY CHRISTMAS and I hope this will be the BEST New Year for each of you!! The Shop with a Cop program joins children who are in need with local law enforcement officers, providing the children with money to shop for Christmas presents for their families and themselves. The program is funded completely from donations. Underprivileged children who partici- pate in the program are chosen by law enforcement officers. Children and officers meet the morning of Shop with a Cop where they travel together in a law enforcement vehi- cle, with lights and siren. First they enjoy a breakfast do- nated by McDonalds and then go to Walmart to shop. Not only do the children get a chance to purchase Christ- mas presents that they otherwise would not be able to buy, but they also get a chance to build a positive relationship with law enforcement. Donations to the program can be made at the Rexburg Police Department 25 East Main Street Rexburg, Idaho 83440 (208) 359-3008 Parking Reminder: Parking on City Streets over night is prohibited starting Decem- ber 15th.
