Hello Wonderful Rexburgers!
As I drove about the city on this beautiful early fall morning I couldn’t help but be overwhelmed with grateful-
ness for this wonderful place we call home. We are so lucky to live here! I recently attended a fundraiser for
the Idaho Meth Project and heard an account from a lady that had been through the nightmare of drug addic-
tion in her family but she was helped by the Idaho Meth Project people and some good folks in the Dept. of
Corrections to get her life back together and is now a happy, productive citizen. It was very inspiring and made
me realize how thankful I am that my family hasn’t had to go through such an experience. However, we are
not immune to substance abuse and we must be ever vigilant for the signs of it creeping into our society and
be willing to expend time and resources to keep this horrible plague out of our homes and families.
I am also grateful for all the good people who volunteer to do good things in our community. Big thanks to
Rachel and Brad Hales for organizing the Obstacle Course activity we had in Smith Park a few Saturdays ago.
They, along with a great crew of young people had obstacles laid out around the park for kids to crawl
through, jump over climb up and over. They even asked for the Spirit bus to be one of the obstacles for the
kids to go through. It was a great success and we are planning on making it an annual event each August, so if
you missed it, you can look forward to it next year!
I would be remiss not to mention Jessica Goudy and her great staff at Madison Cares for another fabulous
Celebrate Youth party. What a great way to kick off a new school year! We are looking for great things to
come from our kids in their academics, sports, the arts and all the other good things they do.
Please put on your calendar to attend our newest celebration… the Heritage Festival! I have felt like we need
something to bring the University community and the local townspeople together more so we are organizing a
celebration to highlight how Rexburg and Ricks College/BYU Idaho have grown up together. Most activities
will center around our heritage of agriculture and education. We will have a tractor parade featuring old, mid-
dle aged, and the newest farm tractors, including one souped up, hot rod unit, a flag football game for anyone
to join in, games such as potato sack races, the world’s largest potato bar and Chili Cook-off and a street festi-
val for downtown merchants and sidewalk vendors to highlight their wares. The purpose is for us local folks
and the university students to mix and mingle and get to know each other a little bit. I believe when we learn
about each other, we appreciate each other more and get along better. The dates for this event will be Septem-
ber 23rd and 24th. The opening ceremony will be Friday, Sept. 23rd, in conjunction with the Farmers Market
and just prior to the Madison Varsity Football game. The University Drama Department will be putting on a
production that night for all to attend. The next day, Saturday Sept. 24th, will be the tractor parade, chili cook-
off, potato bar and all the other activities. Everything will happen at the grassy lots on College Avenue and on
Center and Main Streets. We will also have a special “Museum Come Alive” event to help all of us learn more
about our Rexburg history. You will be hearing more about this fun event in the weeks to come so please plan
on attending with your family. It will be lots of fun!!
The City of Rexburg has been selected as a finalist for a $250,000 Blue Cross of Idaho Foundation Community
Transformation Grant. This grant is awarded each year to communities who demonstrate a community-wide
focus on creating, improving and fostering healthy and active lifestyles in youth, specifically through active
living and healthy eating. The City of Rexburg is working with the Madison School District and Madison Me-
morial Hospital, as well as other groups in applying for this grant. The Blue Cross Foundation wants to see the
community support the High Five Grant by uniting and showing their support. The High Five Grant will post
a video, along with those videos from other finalist cities, and invite communities members to vote on the
videos. Rexburg’s Grant Committee would like to encourage community members to look for this video and
to show their support by voting for Rexburg. The time and place for this video will be announced soon by the
Blue Cross Foundation. Please lend your support to this community wide endeavor, and look for ways to par-
ticipate, vote and encourage the High Five Grant.
I so appreciate all of you citizens that make Rexburg such a great place and our City Team Members that keep
everything running smoothly. I love all the kindness that I feel around me each day and I encourage all to look
around and see what you can do to be of service to someone who needs a helping hand.
Thank you,
Mayor Jerry Merrill Life is Great…in Rexburg, Idaho!!
